Book Description
Excerpt from The Possibilities of the Negro in Symposium The negro is with us, much has been said and written, but the last word has not yet been spoken, for "nothing is settled, till it is settled right." After the strife of words and the ebullition of passion, right and truth will remain. No doubt, much that was unwise and untrue has been said. Men have discussed this question from the viewpoint of prejudice, passion, and personal interest as well as from sincere, though often misdirected philanthropy. But many of the highest minds have carefully considered this problem; some are still seeking for a solution; others have thought it through, and from their premises have reached a conclusion. Dr. Willis B. Parks, the author of the essay which closes this volume, has rendered a service to the thinking public by collecting and putting in permanent form the mature thought of some of the leading men of both races, as well as by his own contribution to the discussion of this question. The study of the negro from a psychological standpoint, gives promise of a better understanding of the peculiarities of his character and conduct that have been difficult to explain, and furnishes valuable suggestions of more intelligent methods for his improvement. The author, with scientific candor and firmness, seeks to check any tendency toward dehumanizing the negro by showing from the application of the principles of psychology that he is "not a beast," but a man. Book Description
Excerpt from Shall the Negro Be Educated or Suppressed?: A Symposium on Dr. Haygood's Reply to Senator Eustis's Paper on Race Antagonism As to Senator Eustis's article, I think it is just about as good and as bad as Senator Chandler's Our Southern Masters, and perhaps the best thing that could be done with both would be to print them together in one pamphlet and send them out to neutral ize each other. I indorse the spirit and the matter of Dr. Hay good's reply to Senator Eustis's article. Dr. Haygood is the one Southern man whom I should be willing to follow blindfold on the Negro question. He understands the subject. What his heart prompts and his head approves he has the courage to do - always the right, as he sees it. In this as in all other matters. Book Description
Excerpt from The South and the Negro: An Address Delivered at the Seventh Annual Conference for Education in the South Birmingham, Ala;, April 26th, 1904 Whatever the cause or causes, there is no disguising the fact that there is great unrest and growing discontent among the negroes of the South. They are beginning to feel friend less and hopeless. The frequent Iynchings that disgrace our civilization, the advocacy by some of limiting to the minimum the school advantages provided for them, and the widening gulf of separation between the younger generations of both races, have produced a measure of despair. There are few negroes in my native State of Mississippi, the owners of property, who would not sell out at a fair valuation. Many of the thriftiest and most conservative feel, Whether justly or not, that sentiment is so hostile to their race as to make all their values insecure. And as opportunity offers they are quietly leaving the sections in which they have long lived and labored. Book Description
Excerpt from Report of the Fifth Tuskegee Negro Conference, 1896 The Trustees believe that the experimental period in the education of the blacks is drawing to a close. Certain principles that were doubted thirty years ago now appear to be generally recognized as sound. In the next thirty years better systems will undoubtedly prevail, and the aid of the separate States is likely to be more and more freely bestowed. There will also be abundant room for continued generosity on the part of individuals and associations. It is to encourage and assist the workers and the thinkers that these papers will be published. Each paper, excepting the first number (made up chiefly of official docu ments), will be the utterance Of the writer whose name is attached to it, the Trustees disclaiming in advance all responsibility for the statement of facts and opinions. Book Description
Excerpt from The Negro Artisan: A Social Study, Made Under the Direction of Atlanta University by the Seventh Atlanta Conference "The work with the Negro must affect also our work with the brown man and the yellow man. The object is not to train him only to become useful or innocuous, to be a helot of toil, to be a producer, - but under and over all is the fact that the Negro, however unfit he may be now or for some time to come to exercise the political franchise, must be educated so that in time he may become worthy to be in full sense a citizen. We can not endure as a republic if we have classes among us not educated to assume the duties of citizenship. As moral human beings we cannot afford to treat another human being as if he were, less than human." Dr. Felix Abler. January 9, 1903. "When I speak of industrial education I do not mean to dis parage higher education, which will provide teachers. The important thing is to give the best education which it is possible for the recipient to use, which will bring out the best in the student." Book Description
Excerpt from Twelfth Annual Report of the Hampton Negro Conference, 1908 The great difficulty at present, according to Mr. Stone, is the absence of proper incentive to labor among the masses of the Negro race. Their wants are few. And easily satisfied consequently they feel no necessity for continuous labor. One of the important aims of education Should be the development of wants, especially wants for better homes, better schools, and better churches. With the awakening of new desires among the Negro people we shall have a guarantee of more persistent and careful labor.
