Book Description
The intertwining careers of William Torrey Harris (1835-1909) converge in twelve of the Annual Reports of the Board of Directors for St. Louis Public Schools. Harris formulated most of the essential features of these twelve reports as the Superintendent of Schools from 1867 to 1869. These particular reports--which have been acclaimed nationally and internationally--are said to be among the most valuable official publications in American educational literature. They are far different from the descriptive documents originally intended by their author. This study demonstrates that Harris provided an authentic philosophy of education, a set of interrelated philosophical principles and their applications to educational problems. The substance of Harris's philosophy of education is focused upon a broadly based philosophical anthropology in relationship primarily to the purposes, curriculum, and teaching methods in intellectual, moral, and religious education.

Book Description
Assembled in honor of the two-hundredth anniversary of the birth of philanthropist and entrepreneur Henry Shaw (1800-1889), St. Louis in the Century of Henry Shaw is a collection of nine provocative essays that together provide a definitive account of the life of St. Louis during the 1800s, a thriving period during which the city acquired the status of the largest metropolis in the American West. Shaw, who established the Missouri Botanical Garden in 1859, was just one of the many immigrants who left their mark on this complex, culturally rich city during the century of its greatest growth. This volume examines the lives of a number of these men and women, from celebrated leaders such as Senator Thomas Hart Benton and the Reverend William Greenleaf Eliot to the thousands of Germans, African Americans, and others whose labor built the city we recognize today. Leading scholars reconstruct and interpret the world that Shaw knew in his long lifetime: a world of contention and of creativity, of trendsetting developments in politics, business, scientific research, and the arts. Shaw's own story mirrored these developments. Born in Sheffield, England, he immigrated to the United States in 1819 and soon moved to St. Louis. Ultimately becoming a very successful businessman and philanthropist, he was a participant in and a witness to the vast economic and cultural transformation of the city.

Book Description
This volume traces the history of Western philosophy of education through the Modern Era. The period between 1850 and 1914 was a time of struggle for justice and opportunity, during which influential thinkers – among them, John Dewey, Maria Montessori, and W.E.B. Du Bois – addressed how education is fundamentally connected to questions of what it means to be human. Readers will find a provocative collection of educational theories and concepts that point to the inherent value of the diversity of human experience and background. Each chapter illuminates how the ideas of the modern era hold promise for a meaningful re-envisioning of educational practice and policy today. About A History of Western Philosophy of Education: An essential resource for researchers, scholars, and students of education, this five-volume set that traces the development of philosophy of education through Western culture and history. Focusing on philosophers who have theorized education and its implementation, the series constitutes a fresh, dynamic, and developing view of educational philosophy. It expands our educational possibilities by reinvigorating philosophy's vibrant critical tradition, connecting old and new perspectives, and identifying the continuity of critique and reconstruction. It also includes a timeline showing major historical events, including educational initiatives and the publication of noteworthy philosophical works.

Book Description
Early childhood education is fundamental to a child's later educational achievements and future success. The principles and practices of modern early childhood education have their origins in the past. While the educators who built the field have been the subject of many detailed studies, previous works do not provide adequate coverage of primary and secondary sources, multicultural educators, or more recent leaders in the discipline. This reference book provides biographies and annotated bibliographies of more than 30 pioneers in early childhood education from Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670) and John Locke (1632-1704), to Maria Montessori (1870-1952), Leland B. Jacobs (1907-1992), and Lillian Weber (1917-1994). Special attention is given to multicultural educators, including Mary Church Terrell (1863-1954) and her work with The National Association of Colored Women. Biographies are arranged alphabetically, and each is followed by annotated bibliographies of primary and secondary sources. An introductory essay briefly discusses the history of early childhood education from the 17th century to the present. The following biographies are arranged alphabetically, and each includes a brief summary of the subjects contributions to the field of early childhood education. Each biographical sketch is followed by annotated bibliography of primary and secondary sources, including obituaries, articles, dissertations, and books. Works were selected because they represent the most interesting and informative sources by and about the educators. The volume closes with a chronological listing of the pioneers and a selected bibliography of general works on early childhood education.
