Excerpt from The Pet of the Settlement: A Story of Prairie-Land The incidents upon which the following story is founded, were related to me several years ago by an aged pioneer, with the request that I would embody them in a narrative. City-born and city-bred, I did not then feel equal to the attempt. But four years of actual pioneer life in the valley of the Upper Des Moines, of emigrant life in a cabin on the prairie, have, I think, given me experience enough in West ern scenery and Western character, to delineate, with at least tolerable accuracy and fidelity, the events which form the various chapters of my story. Many of the minor incidents are truthful transcripts from my own pioneer joys and sorrows, while the scenery is the same that gladdens mv eyes every tinie I look from my cabin window. Rethinking settlement and integration argues that concepts well-established in migration studies such as ‘settlement’ and ‘integration’ do not sufficiently capture the features of adaptation and settling of contemporary migrants. Instead, Grzymala-Kazlowska proposes the integrative and transdisciplinary concept of 'anchoring', linking the notions of identity, adaptation and settling while underlining migrants’ efforts at recovering their feeling of security and stability. Drawing on in-depth interviews and questionnaires with Polish migrants in the United Kingdom and Ukrainian migrants in Poland, ethnographic and autobiographical research as well as the analysis of texts from internet forums and blogs, this monograph demonstrates the applications of the author’s original concept of 'anchoring', and its foregrounding of the combination of sociological and psychological perspectives. Rethinking settlement and integration aims not only to examine the processes of adaptation and settling among today’s migrants, but highlights practical implications to better support individuals facing changes and challenges in new, complex and fluid societies.

Although scholars in the disciplines of law, psychology, philosophy, and sociology have published a considerable number of prescriptive, normative, and theoretical studies of animals in society, Pet Politics presents the first study of the development of companion animal or pet law and policy in Canada and the United States by political scientists. The authors examine how people and governments classify three species of pets or companion animals-cats, dogs, and horses-for various degrees of legal protection. They then detail how interest groups shape the agenda for companion animal legislation and regulation, and the legislative and administrative formulation of anticruelty, kennel licensing, horse slaughter, feral and roaming cat, and breed ban policies. Finally, they examine the enforcement of these laws and policies by agencies and the courts. Using an eclectic mix of original empirical data, original case studies, and interviews-and relying on general theories and research about the policy process and the sociopolitical function of legality-the authors illustrate that pet policy is a unique field of political struggle, a conflict that originates from differing perspectives about whether pets are property or autonomous beings, and clashing norms about the care of animals. The result of the political struggle, the authors argue, is difficulty in the enactment of policies and especially in the implementation and enforcement of laws that might improve the welfare of companion animals.
