John William Colenso, D.D., Bishop of Natal" Holy Ghost, questions of very similar import, though we freely acknowledge somewhat less full and definite, were put and answered. We do not lay stress either on the first or the second of these questions, because it is an avowed tenet of the Maurician school, of which Dr. CO lenso professed himself to be at that time a disciple, that the Bible contains the Word of God, though the Bible and the Word of God are not equivalent expressions. This distinction is, we believe, wholly irreconcilable with any fair interpretation of our formularies; but we cannot deny that the mere language Of the second question might grammatically admit of it, and we do not wish, therefore, to impugn the honesty of Dr. Colenso's reply. But the third question is different, and definitely precludes that very state of mental hesitation in which Dr. Colenso declares himself to have been at the time. Will you then faithfully exercise yourself in the same holy Scripture, and call upon God by prayer for the true understanding of the same? And Dr. Colenso, conscious of doubts in his own mind - doubts which he was deliberately putting on one Side - relative to the truth of this holy Scripture; doubts, moreover, which he must have known, or ought to have known, to affect the entire authority of Scripture altogether - Dr. Colenso answered before the Church, I will so do by the help of God. For many years, the historical-critical quest for a reconstruction of the origin(s) and development of the Pentateuch or Hexateuch has been dominated by the documentary hypothesis, the heuristic power of which has produced a consensus so strong that an interpreter who did not operate within its framework was hardly regarded as a scholar. However, the relentless march of research on this topic has continued to yield new and refined analyses, data, methodological tools, and criticism. In this spirit, the contributions to this volume investigate new ideas about the composition of the Pentateuch arising from careful analysis of the biblical text against its ancient Near Eastern background. Covering a wide spectrum of topics and diverging perspectives, the chapters in this book are grouped into two parts. The first is primarily concerned with the history of scholarship and alternative approaches to the development of the Pentateuch. The second focuses on the exegesis of particular texts relevant to the composition of the Torah.
