Book Description
The region of the Fourth Nile Cataract in northern Sudan is a hitherto little researched part of the Nile valley which will soon be ?ooded by the rising waters of a large hydro-electric dam. The reservoir will cause the irreversible loss of the rich cultural heritage of this remote part of the Middle Nile. As an answer to this threat the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums of the Sudan inaugurated the Merowe Dam Archaeological Salvage Project, in which numerous international missions from several European countries and the United States participate. The volume assembles 20 papers from the ? elds of archaeology, ethnography and geography originally presented at the 2nd International Conference on the Archaeology of the 4th Nile Cataract held at Humboldt University Berlin in 2005. The contributions span a wide thematic and temporal range from general survey results and site excavation reports from different concessions to specialised articles on burial types, pottery, rock art, inscriptional material, site preservation and on the modern life of the Manasir people.

Book Description
The individual character of Kingdom of Kush has often been overshadowed by the overwhelming cultural presence of its neighbour Egypt. This handbook in our series "Handbuch der Orientalistik/Handbook of Oriental Studies" for the first time presents a comprehensive survey of the rich textual, archaeological and art historical evidence for this Middle Nile Region Kingdom of Kush. Basing itself both on the evidence and scholarly literature, this work discusses the emergence of the native state of Kush (after the Pharaonic domination in the 11th century B.C.), the rule of the Kings of Kush in Egypt (c. 760-656) and the intellectual foundations and political history of the Kingdom in the Napatan (7th - 3rd centuries) and Meroitic (3rd century B.C. - 4th century A.D.) periods.

Book Description
The Museum holds the world's largest collection of Christian inscriptions from Nubia south of the modern frontier with Egypt, about half of the which are in Coptic. The Greek texts are cataloged in a companion volume. The 128 inscriptions here are only monumental, the object of traditional epigraphy, and do not include the related dipinti accompanying wall paintings and graffiti on pottery. Almost all of them are funerary. Even the smallest fragments are included, because the knowledge of Medieval Nubia is quite meager and anything may prove useful. The copious notes and comments pay much attention to questions of archaeological context, language variation, and literary culture. The pieces are illustrated with monochrome photographs. Book Description

Book Description
Gathered together here are the fruits of 60 years of research by the late Sir Laurence Kirwan into the history and archaeology of the mid 1st millennium AD in the Middle Nile Valley, papers previously scattered through a wide range of publications. Kirwan's fieldwork in the region, undertaken between 1929 and 1936, kindled a life-long interest in the transition from the pagan Kushite kingdom to the medieval Nubian states of Nobadia, Makuria and Alodia (Alwa) and of their conversion to Christianity in the 6th century AD. The 25 studies, one published here for the first time, were often of seminal importance when they first appeared, the author being exemplary in his use of the written sources to elucidate the archaeological data. As the preface by the editors shows, the views expressed remain fundamental to modern scholarship, offering valuable insights into this still relatively obscure period of transition from the ancient to the medieval world.
