Book Description
Excerpt from The Palace of Minos, Vol. 1: A Comparative Account of the Successive Stages of the Early Cretan Civilization as Illustrated by the Discoveries at Knossos; The Neolithic and Early and Middle Minoan Ages The proposed classification was favourably received by my colleagues, to several of whom I subsequently had an opportunity of explaining many points in detail on the scene of the excavations at Knossos itself. Subsequent discoveries made some modifications of the original system desirable, and a sketch of this revised outline of classification was laid by me before the Archaeological Congress at Rome in October, 1912, where the idea of the present work received most welcome encouragement. In the case of the Palace site of Knossos not only the immense com plication-of the plan itself, with its upper as well as its lower stories, but the volume and variety of the relics brought to light - unrivalled perhaps in any equal area of the Earth's surface ever excavated - have demanded for the working up of the material a longer time than was required for the actual excavations. To take a case in point, the painted stucco fragments could only be gradually pieced together as the result of long and laborious efforts. Book Description
On March 23, 1900, Arthur John Evans and his staff began to excavate on Crete, looking for the fabled site of Knossos, where an extraordinary civilization, a precursor to classical Greece, was rumored to have existed. Almost from the first shovel stroke, artifacts began to emerge. Evans realized that here was "an extraordinary phenomenon, nothing Greek, nothing Roman. A wholly unexplored world." The Palace of Minos at Knossos recounts the exciting story of uncovering a remarkable society lost to the world for 3,500 years, from its initial discovery through its excavation to the structure we see today. Sidebars on archaeological techniques, illustrations of the sites, tables, and diagrams throughout provide a wealth of information on the Palace. The use of artifacts and other "documents" recovered from the Palace bring out the voices of the people of the past, offering clues to who they were and how they lived. The Palace of Minos at Knossos concludes with an interview with archaeologist Chris Scarre who talks about the misperceptions about Knossos and what we really know about its culture.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Palace of Minos, Vol. 4: A Comparative Account of the Successive Stages of the Early Cretan Civilization as Illustrated by the Discoveries at Knossos; Part 1, Emergence of Outer Western Enceinte, With New Illustrations, Artistic and Religious, of the Middle Minoan Phase The broad treatment necessary for the interpretation of the varied evidence has indeed entailed a survey extending far beyond the Aegean and even the Libyan Sea, and constant reference has been 'found necessary to contemporary and still earlier civilizations from the Nile Valley to the Euphrates. Such conditions, indeed, transcend the limits of individual capacity, and in the small measure in which it may have been possible to fulfil them the notes appended to these 'volumes record my repeated acknowledgements to the work of fellow explorers in this wide area. This broad survey and the explanatory materials thus included may give the successive Volumes of this Work - though always centring round the Great Palace - some title to be regarded as an Encyclopaedia of Minoan cultural features, of its Art, and of its Religion. The Index Volume to the whole work, kindly undertaken by my sister, Dr. Joan Evans, and already well advanced, will greatly help to make it generally serviceable. Book Description
In the spring of 1900, British archaeologist Arthur Evans began to excavate the palace of Knossos on Crete, bringing ancient Greek legends to life just as a new century dawned amid far-reaching questions about human history, art, and culture. With Knossos and the Prophets of Modernism, Cathy Gere relates the fascinating story of Evans’s excavation and its long-term effects on Western culture. After the World War I left the Enlightenment dream in tatters, the lost paradise that Evans offered in the concrete labyrinth—pacifist and matriarchal, pagan and cosmic—seemed to offer a new way forward for writers, artists, and thinkers such as Sigmund Freud, James Joyce, Giorgio de Chirico, Robert Graves, and Hilda Doolittle. Assembling a brilliant, talented, and eccentric cast at a moment of tremendous intellectual vitality and wrenching change, Cathy Gere paints an unforgettable portrait of the age of concrete and the birth of modernism.
