Book Description
Excerpt from The Pageant of Canadian History The unconventional pattern of this book requires some ex planation for readers who expect to find the historical narrative proceeding chronologically from year to year. I have seen the vigorous history of Canada in big sweeps of movement; the dramatic period of French exploration and the life of New France; the pursuit of fur which carried explorers and traders all the way to the Pacific; the growth of a few small British colonies into the Dominion of Canada; tllen the winning of the west and the advance to modern nationhood. This method in volves some shuffling back and forth in time, but it makes clear the motive power of ideas and ambitions that urged the people on from one period to another of their history. The book is as the title indicates, a pageant, a story of the land and people, rather than a historian's study. It has been written for my fel low Americans, to pass on my discovery of the vivid history of our northern neighbors and my admiration for them. The book is also offered to Canadians in the hope that they will accept this interpretation of their story by an enthusiastic friend across the border. I wish to express my appreciation to many Canadi ans of town and country who welcomed me with so much friendliness; to librarians, and to officers of 'a variety of institu tions who courteously gave their time and interest to help me with information. Book Description
Excerpt from A Canadian's View of the Battle of Plattsburgh I do not pretend to give the Canadian View of the battle. I fancy the views taken by Canadians of this battle are as varied as those taken by Americans or Englishmen; and I do no more than give you the view of one Canadian, proud of the name. It is a remarkable circumstance that from the very beginning of the war the American Government was sincerely desirous of peace. A great wrong was done to President Madison by a whole political party in charg ing him with a desire for war in order to better his political fortunes; but this charge still makes itself heard from time to time. It is most true that from the South and West came an insistent cry for war, which it was found impossible to resist; and from the same quarters the cry continued, during the whole period of the war, for its continuance. Book Description
Excerpt from The Winning of Canada: A Chronicle of Wolfe Any life of Wolfe can be artificially simplified by treating his purely military work as something complete in itself and not as a part of a greater whole. But, since such treatment gives a totally false idea of his achievement, this little sketch, drawn straight from original sources, tries to show him as he really was, a co-worker with the British fleet in a war based entirely on naval strategy and inseparably connected with international affairs of world-wide significance. The only simplification attempted here is that of arrangement and expression. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Patriot War In 1763 when Gen. Gage, the British commander, drafted a contin gent of French Canadians to aid in revenging on the Indians the massa cre of the garrison at Mackinaw, the levies were treated as beasts of burden, and set to work at the point of the bayonet, while the British regulars sat at ease in their tents. The legislative council or senate excluded all natives of Canada from a share in the conduct of its affairs. N 0 correct idea can be given within the narrow limits of a newspaper history of the vexatious injustice practiced upon the French population. They were at one time denied the right of sitting as jurors, and were in many respects a proscribed class. Small wonder that many French Canadians joined the ranks of the heroes of the American revolution in 1776. Book Description
Excerpt from Lillian, or Woman's Endurance: A Narrative Connected With the Early History of Canada and the American Revolution ON one of those stormy nights that can perhaps be experienced only in Lower Canada, when it is impossible to judge with certainty how soon the wind will veer, or from which point of the compass it will next come, - the snow driving with a fury and an impetuosity that may emphatically be termed Canadian, or whirling in every direction in eddies, large and small, according to the size of the obstruction that diverts it or impedes its progress, and in places forming drifts that must be seen tofully realize their magnitude, - while such a storm is raging, we will enter one of those snug and comfortable white washed cottages in the neighborhood of the Quebec Barracks, in the city of Montreal, as it appeared in the latter part of the last century. But before doing so we will take a cursory glance at its exterior. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The 'Patriotes' of '37: A Chronicle of the Lower Canadian Rebellion The manuscript for this little book, written by me in French, was handed over for transla tion to Mr Stewart Wallace. The result as here presented is therefore a joint product. Mr Wallace, himself a writer of ability and a student of Canadian history, naturally made a very free translation of my work and intro duced some ideas of his own. He insists, however, that the work is mine; and, with this acknowledgment of his part in it, I can do no less than acquiesce, at the same time expressing my pleasure at having had as collaborator a young writer of such good in sight. And it is surely appropriate that an English Canadian and a French Canadian should join in a narrative of the political war.
