The Other-Conscious Ethics of Innovative Black Poetry
Author: Grant Matthew Jenkins
Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan
ISBN: 9783031713668
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This monograph identifies and investigates the ‘other-conscious’ ethics in black avant-garde poetry since the 1980s. Drawing on a long tradition of ethical ideas that put the Other first, this work shows how black poets writing in an avant garde or experimental vein in the United States push language to its limits to reveal how poetry can not only address but exemplify ethical postures towards some of this period’s most pressing ethical issues, including postcolonial and racialized violence, the history of slavery and segregation in America, and the expansion of human consciousness. The writers involved in this study include Nathaniel Mackey, Erica Hunt, Will Alexander, Harryette Mullen, and Mark McMorris.

ISBN: 9781868142149
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 308

This volume is a collection of essays that explore aspects of popular culture in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. These writings examine such topics as the degree of state control over theatre, the interaction - or lack of it - between high and popular culture, the struggle to define meaningful cultural forms in the wake of a dominating and exclusive colonial culture and the contribution of women. What emerges is a strong sense of regional concerns shared by the Southern African cultures under discussion, the contributors also give voice to crucial differences and debates on the nature of contemporary theatre and performance and the links with popular culture, politics and nation.
