Excerpt from The Indigenous Trees of the Hawaiian Islands It has long been the writer's desire to give to the public a volume on the native trees of Hawaii, giving popular as well as technical descriptions of the trees peculiar to Hawaiian soil. At first it was thought that plain popular descriptions would suffice, but it soon became evident that the technical part could not be dispensed with, and in order to make the look valuable for both the layman and the scientist, it was therefore included. The rather lengthy introduction seemed an advisable featured and necessary, as it gives practically for the first time a more or less detailed description of all the floral regions and their plant associations found in this island group, not being restricted to trees alone but embracing the whole plant covering. In the sequence of families Engler and Prantl's Naturliche Pflanzenfamilien System has been followed, beginning with the Cryptogams and ending with the Composite. Under each species a complete reference and synonomy is given, as far as was possible. Of course, as in all works of this nature, mistakes will undoubtedly be found, which will have to be overlooked on account of the insular position of the writer, as it was not always possible to consult original works, some of them old and out of print and therefore unobtainable. It will not be out of place here to acknowledge the kind assistance of Miss Mary A. Day, the Librarian of the Gray Herbarium, for the loan of books and copies of articles, etc. Following the reference is a technical description, usually enlarged and based on material in the College of Hawaii Herbarium; only in such instances as when the plant is very common or has not been collected by the writer, are descriptions of old authors quoted. As far as possible native names are given under most of the trees in italics, as well as any legendary or other facts of sufficient interest, together with habitat, plant association, etc. Of a number of trees of which nothing is known of a popular nature, the technical side is enlarged upon, especially in the family Rutaceae (genus I Pelea) and Campanulaceae (tribe Lobelioideae). The writer wishes here to acknowledge above all the kind assistance of Prof. Dr. Ignatz Urban of Berlin. Prof. Le Compte of Paris, Prof. Dr. A Zahlbruckner of Vienna and Profs. H. L. Robinson and M. L. Fernald of Harvard, in the loan of herbarium material, mainly types, for comparison, without which the authenticity of many determinations would have been doubtful; this refers mainly to the tribe Lobelioideae of the family Campanulaceae, one of the most intricate tribes found in this Islands. Excerpt from The Ornamental Trees of Hawaii During a residence of more than nine years in these lovely Islands, the writer has had opportunity in his connection with the Board of Agriculture and Forestry and the College of Hawaii, as Botanist, to devote all his time and lately part of his time to the study of the Hawaiian Flora. It is true he was not interested until lately in the introduced ornamental plants of Hawaii, but made the native Flora his specialty. The result of part of the writer's research was published under the title "The Indigenous Trees of the Hawaiian Islands." Many have been the requests, however, for a non-technical volume treating the ornamental shrubs and trees of Hawaii and Honolulu especially, the need of which has long been felt. The writer took it upon himself to prepare such a book, which at first seemed an easy task. He was, however, sadly mistaken. While some of the trees did not give much difficulty as far as their identity was concerned, others again proved more elusive, especially such as belong to genera with numerous species. It took many journeys to all the by-ways of Honolulu in search of plants, and often the writer was told that in such and such a yard there was a tree which seemed to be the only one in Honolulu. Often the tale proved to be true, and occasionally it was a false alarm. It may be stated that the plants treated or mentioned in this volume are represented by specimens in the College of Hawaii Herbarium, and that they have been critically worked up. They have not been cited from mere hear-say, but specimens were examined in every instance. The nomenclature has been kept strictly in accordance with the laws laid down by the last Botanical Congress held at Vienna in 1905 and not according to horticultural dealers or gardeners, who simply apply a familiar name to a plant for the sole purpose of selling it more easily. This accounts for the many species of Kentia, while in reality none of the palms on the market as such have anything whatsoever in common with species of that rare genus. Nomenclature of such type belongs to commercial botany. While the tide of this book is a modest one it gives more information than is announced on the cover. The writer has treated not only the ornamental trees, but also shrubs and in addition has mentioned the fruit trees and ornamental vines. Excerpt from Ornamental Hibiscus in Hawaii For many years there has been a growing interest in hibiscus in Hawaii. Several admirers of this ornamental plant in their travels about the world have lost no Opportunity to secure desirable varieties of hibiscus for planting. At least thirty-three varieties have been brought from other regions to Hawaii. These forms, together with the eight or more species native to Hawaii, have furnished excellent stock from which to obtain numerous forms which we now have as the result of crossing. One point in favor of the use of hibiscus as an ornamental plant, either in hedges or as individual plants, is the fact that it is relatively free from serious insect pests and fungus diseases. In a region where the attacks of insects are likely to bring about a ragged con dition of the foliage this relative immunity is an important point to consider. The work which this Station has done with ornamental hibiscus began in June, 1909, and has been carried on continuously since that date. The growing demand from the military posts about Honolulu and from private individuals in Honolulu and elsewhere in Hawaii for cuttings, has made it necessary to have a large variety o of hibiscus from which to select cuttings for distribution. The Station has distributed upon request about hibiscus cut tings, and the demand for this ornamental plant is growing from month to month. As a further evidence of the interest taken in hibiscus in Honolulu it may be mentioned that a hibiscus society was formed in 1911, with the Object of studying the forms of hibiscus which are now to be found in Hawaii, stimulating interest in the more desirable varieties and calling attention to the possibility of Obtaining these for ornamenting gardens and grounds.
