This study fills a gap in general histories of the oratorio. The number of oratorio performances given in Venice from 1662-1809 was huge, yet the contribution of the city to the history of the genre is often overlooked. Denis and Elsie Arnold examine the fortunes of the genre in Venice, beginning with the arrival of the Oratorians in c.1660 and their establishment at the church of S. Maria della Consolazione (the Fava). The book charts the early success of oratorios by Legrenzi and Pallavicino in the latter part of the seventeenth century, the fallow years from c.1700-1740, and the great revival of interest in oratorio from the 1740s through to 1770 with works by Scalabrini, Jommeli, Galuppi and Bertoni. The volume features a list of all the oratorios given in Venice from 1662-1809. It also includes a list of singers which helps us to date a great deal of Venetian church music of the period.

The Oratorio in the classical Era is the third volume of Howard Smither's monumental History of the Oratorio, continuing his synthesis and critical appraisal of the oratorio. His comprehensive study surpasses in scope and treatment all previous works on the subject. A fourth and final volume, on the oratorio in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, is forthcoming. In this volume Smither discusses the Italian oratorio from the 1720s to the early nineteenth century and oratorios from other parts of Europe from the 1750s to the nineteenth century. Drawing on works that represent various types, languages, and geographical areas, Smither treats the general characteristics of oratorio libretto and music and analyzes twenty-two oratorios from Italy, England, Germany, France, and Russia. He synthesizes the results of specialized studies and contributes new material based on firsthand study of eighteenth-century music manuscripts and printed librettos. Emphasizing the large number of social contexts within which oratorios were heard, Smither discussed examples in Italy such as the Congregation of the Oratory, lay contrafraternities, and educational institutions. He examines oratorio performances in German courts, London theaters and English provincial festivals, and the Parisian Concert spirituel. Though the volume concentrates primarily on eighteenth-century oratorio from the early to the late Classical styles, Smither includes such transitional works as the oratorios of Jean-Francios le Seur in Paris and Stepan Anikievich Degtiarev in Moscow. A History of the Oratorio is the first full-length history of the genre since Arnold Schering's 1911 study. In addition to synthesizing current thought about the oratorio, this volume contributes new information on relationships between oratorio librettos and contemporary literary and religious thought, and on the musical differences among oratorios from different geographical-cultural regions. In the late seventeenth century the oratorio in Italy was in a state of flux. Ostensibly religious in character, it was becoming increasingly prone to operatic influence and subject to political pressure from wealth patrons. One notable patron was Francesco II d'Este, duke of Modena from 1674 to 1694, who was a generous sponsor of the oratorio and an avid collector of musical scores. This book is the first to study the oratorio genre as it pertained to Modena, and to offer a critical survey of Francesco II's oratorio collection, setting it within the context of the duchy's uneasy political relationships with Rome, Paris, and London. It describes the development of the oratorio tradition in Modena under the direction of successive court maestri, dealing with the range of works and singling out specific masterpieces by Ferrari, Stradella, de Grandis, Scarlatti, Colonna, Gianettini, Palermino, Vitali, Pistocchi, and Vinacesi for detailed examination. Since few critical editions of these works are available, these discussions are amplified by many quotations from libretti and scores. The book also covers general historical matters that had an effect upon the oratorio in Modena, for example the renovation of the city and its institutions in the early seventeenth century, the development of the Cappella Ducale, the religious life of the city and court, and the political alliances which were crucial to the security and prestige of the duchy.

This book considers the production of collective identity in Venice (Christian, civic-minded, anti-tyrannical), which turned on distinctions drawn in various fields of representation from painting, sculpture, print, and performance to classified correspondence. Dismemberment and decapitation bore a heavy burden in this regard, given as indices of an arbitrary violence ascribed to Venice’s long-time adversary, “the infidel Turk.” The book also addresses the recuperation of violence in Venetian discourse about maintaining civic order and waging crusade. Finally, it examines mobile populations operating in the porous limits between Venetian Dalmatia and Ottoman Bosnia and the distinctions they disrupted between “Venetian” and “Turk” until their settlement on farmland of the Venetian state. This occurred in the eighteenth century with the closing of the borderlands, thresholds of difference against which early modern “Venetian-ness” was repeatedly measured and affirmed.
