In the rear of the house, at no great distance, was a pond of some half a mile in circumference, and so shallow, in many places, that a variety of aquatic shrubs grew out above the surface, where congregated clouds of bl ack-birds, whose mu sic made but poor amends for their depredations on the newly planted corn-fields. This was not the only music; for, of a still summer evening, the sonorous bull-frog ever and anon twanged his horn, aecom panied by a mingled variety of strange harmonies.
