Book Description
Excerpt from The Miscellaneous Works and Novels, Vol. 5 of 7 Some house, requested to be considered as his host, till he returned for his family. The morning was agreeably passed in examining the premises, and in making an arrangement for such articles of furniture as Aubrey wanted, and Mr. Dodson was willing to part with. It may be remembered, that the former had no household furniture; what he possessed be fore his uncle's death having been disposed of when the family went abroad, as it would be out of fashion before their return to England. It was therefore Aubrey's intention to see his house first, order what he might want immediately, in the neighbourhood, and write to London for what could not be obtained in the country. This design was in a great measure rendered unnecessary by his having'the option of entering the house nearly completely furnished. The moveables that had been put in by Mr. Dod son were good and fashionable; but there were a variety of articles which had been long stationary, and which he had purchased from the rector. These formed a considerable part of the furniture, and though they were not fashionable, they possessed a simple dignity derived from their appearance and from the proprietors to whom they had belonged, which had always obtained them more admiration than the lighter ornaments of modern taste. They consisted of massy wardrobes, marble slabs and vases, mahogany tables, large mirrors, and china jars. When Aubrey expressed his intention to include these articles, Mr. Dodson informed him, that Dr. Searle had repurchased them as soon as he knew of his preferment; but said, at the same time, that he had no doubt that the Doctor would let him have them. Having settled that the rest should be appraised on the Monday following, Mr. Dodson proposed a ride round the adjacent country before dinner. As Arthur soon after conducted his sisters. Book Description
Excerpt from The Novels and Miscellaneous Works, Vol. 7: With a Biographical Memoir of the Author, Literary Prefaces to the Various Pieces, Illustrative Notes, Etc Some tell us, it is enough to wonder at a thing nine days, one would reasonably then conclude, that it is enough that sailing round the world has been wondered at above a hundred years. I shall therefore let the reader know, that it is not the rarity of going round the world that has occasioned this publication, but if some incidents have happened in such a voyage, as either have not happened to others, or as no other people, though performing the same voyage have taken notice of, then this account may be worth publishing, though the thing, viz. The Voyage round the World, be in itself of no value. It is to be observed, of the several navigators whose Voyages round the World have been published, that few, if any of them, have diverted us with that variety which a circle of that length must needs offer. Book Description
Excerpt from Miscellaneous Works and Novels, Vol. 1 of 7 It was my intention, my dear Lord, to publish my opinion of "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage;" and, while I freely indulged myself in the admiration due to it, to enter at some length on the reasons that attach me to doctrines which I had imbibed in my youth from the guiding hand of wisdom, and which I have cherished through life.
