Book Description
Excerpt from The North Carolina Teacher We autocrats of the school-room should each keep a skull upon the magisterial desk as a reminder of our own mortality. Teachers, look well to your own conduct, whether consciously or not, you are influencing the future generation for weal or for woe. You cannot shirk the responsibility, you cannot plead innocent when the final day of reckoning comes, when you must "give an account of the deeds done in the body." Be you saint or sinner, you will be brought to account. Parents have put upon you a very serious and solemn responsibility. Whether the parent be Christian or Mohammedan, Jew, Gentile or Pagan, it matters not. Whether they be Atheists or Polytheists, it matters not. You must influence the pupils for good and not for evil. You must so conduct yourselves that your pupils will feel that to act dishonorably or falsely wall incur your displeasure. Under all circumstances "be just and fear not." Your every act and word is weighed and has an effect little dreamed of by the careless teacher. Though frequently guilty of acts of injustice and cruelty among themselves, school-boys are quick to note the same in their intercourse with you, and on no account will they consider it just to be treated by you as they treat fellow-pupils. They look upon you as a superior being, and expect mercy whenever they are brought to trial. However intellectual you may be, however learned and wise in text-books, however gifted in language or mathematics, your influence for good upon your pupils may all be lost if you do not know how to manage cases of discipline. Whether you have the feeling in your heart or not, no child should ever learn the dreadful truth that his teacher hates him. There are many avenues to the human heart. Seek for them. Try not to close the door of approach, but try to open it. Kindness is the key. Open the door, enter in and take possession, and make the last state of that boy better than the first. Book Description
Excerpt from The North Carolina Teacher, Vol. 12 He deals in mystery and strange things, but he has them all from some other boy who knows, and he is therefore all right. But when you think of what little you recollect of it, and how much you once knew, isn't it pitiful how meagre the mystery and impressiveness that attends the organizations that men have formed? A boy is an odd piece of furniture, but he is the ground and chief ingredient of the man. Delude not yourself with the belief that the boy is not all he pretends to be, for he is a great deal more. He is an incomprehensible fellow to any one but another boy, and because he will presently grow into the awkward between hay-and-grass period that separates boyhood from manhood, and to a lum bering idiot then, don't signify that he is an idiot now He never is. But his Chrysalis state fetters him and makes him seem like one sometimes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The North Carolina Teacher, Vol. 7: September, 1889-June, 1890 The history of every people is one, 'as the history of every individual is one from infancy to old age. And the earlier periods of both, though least known or remembered, are really the most important and enduring, because the most plastic and formative. Mrs. Spencer modestly dis claims, on the behalf of the State, any very high romantic or poetic interest in its early annals like that of the early legends of Virginia, which is as bright with traditionary incident, real or fabled, as the early annals of ancient Rome. Book Description
Excerpt from The North Carolina Teacher, Vol. 6 There is about as much sense in this manner of acting as putting a man's coat upon a little child and telling him that it must fit - it shall fit - "quit your nonsense, talking about it's being too large." A large part of the failures in managing a school springs from just such conduct in the teachers. "But," the teacher may reply, "the pupil must pay attention to what I am saying and understand it," Yes, my friend, you ought to be a wise teacher and have more sense, but you haven't. Volunteers - Conscripts. There are two classes of pupils in every school - volunteers and conscripts; that is to say, some go to school - some are sent. Let every teacher endeavor so to govern that by the second term of school the conscripts may become volunteers. You can easily distinguish these two classes of pupils on the very first day. Again, a school is not a court-room, with all its officers, judge, jury, counsel, witnesses, sheriff, constable, clerk and crier, all combined in the majestic person of the school-teacher. School-children should not be considered as being always on trial, with the court in perpetual session and the charge to the grand jury being perpetually delivered. All the lawyers in this court are commonwealths attorneys and counsel for the prosecution. A new trial is rare, and there is no appeal; for this tribunal is supreme. The jury never disagree, for the verdict is always unanimous. The plea of "not guilty" put forward by the criminal is always considered "too thin" and by no means to have any weight whatsoever with the jury. When a witness for the defence is on the stand, his testimony is mainly considered as simply proving himself an accomplice. Consequently there are not many volunteers on this service, and a subp na is rarely issued. In this court-room the judge's eyes roam constantly around, seeking victims. The sheriff promptly executes all orders for arrest and the docket is always full. These things being well known to the boys, they yield a graceless compliance; for "there is no retreat but in submission and slavery."
