It is far worse taught, even in the same schools, than the higher branches of mathematics. Many a teacher pursues an excel lent system of instruction in Alge bra and Geometry, and yet fails in Arithmetic. The reason obvious ly is, that he was taught the form er correctly himself, but was never taught the latter. Arithmetic has never held in our schools its prep er place as a branch of a science. And consequently the great defect in teaching it is, that attention is paid to its practice and not to its principles. Excerpt from North Carolina Journal of Education, 1897 The people of Memphis are making great preparations for the meeting of the Southern Educational Association, December 27, 28, and 29. They are determined to make it one of the greatest and most pleasant meetings ever held in that city. The officers and committees of the Association are going forward with the preparations of their part of the work, and everything will be in readiness for a more successful meeting than any the Association has yet held. With an increase of 84 per cent. in the school population and an increase of only 2 1/2 per cent, in school attendance, how long will it take North Carolina to wipe out the large percentage of illiteracy with which it is now cursed? A year's subscription to the North Carolina Journal of EDUCATION will be given for the best solution of this problem. How Strong is a State? In a vision Nebuchadnezzar beheld a great image. This image was mighty, his brightness was excellent, his aspect terrible; his head was of fine gold, his breast and arms of silver, his belly and thighs of brass, his legs of iron, his feet part of iron, and part of clay. And when the feet that were of iron and clay were smitten they brake in pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken in pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing-floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them. And so will it ever be -until clay is no longer mixed with iron in the feet. The glory and splendor and wealth of statues and nations may be in the brass and silver and fine gold of other parts of the body, but their strength is in the feet; and their glory and splendor and wealth are as naught in the day of trial, if the feet break by reason of the clay that is in them. No state is stronger that than the strength of intelligence and virtue in the lowest stratum of its citizenship; and especially is this true of the democratic state. School committees and communities sometimes seem to be possessed of an insane desire to change teachers merely for the sake of changing. The teacher's actions are frequently governed by the same spirit. They go from one place to another simply for the sake of change and because they have taught at the old place a year or two or three. It is hard to understand why a teacher who has any faith in his own purposes or confidence in his own ability should not wish to be his own successor from year to year, build upon his own foundation and reap the fruit of his own sowing. We believe the best teachers never desire to change their place except for better pay, better opportunity for self-improvement, opportunity for broader work, or some equally worthy object. They are the shiftless ones who are always shifting and never rising; committees should beware of them. When a community has once secured a good teacher it should keep him as long as possible. Be he Democrat, Republican or Populist; Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Friend, or any one of the more than thirty religious sects in our state; related by blood or marriage to any or all of the people in the community, or to none of them, - none of these things should ever be thought of in employing a new teacher or in keeping an old one. They are all personal matters and should never be considered by committeemen acting in their official capacity. Neither should parents expect or desire their children to be taught by teachers of their own political, religious or family faith. In most cases it is probably better they should not be so taught. They will likely be sufficiently narrow, prejudiced and conceited without such teaching. The only questions to be asked by committeemen or community are, Are you a moral, upright, manly man, or womanly woman? Can you teach? Whatsoever question is more than this probably cometh of evil. Excerpt from North Carolina Journal of Education, 1897, Vol. 1 The Journal of Education asks the continued co-operation of all friends of humanity in hastening this day. The enlistment is for the war. The Woman's Aid Society. - Almost even-social institution is helped, in these days, by some kind of woman's aid society. The Y. M. C. A., the hospital, the parsonage, the rectory, the missionary cause, the church building, all charities of whatever nature have their associations of this kind, and they render very material aid. Why should not every public school have its woman's aid society? The school is not only the training ground for the children; it is also their home for a great part of their early life. What nobler thing can mothers and young ladies undertake than to aid in making the school more efficient and the homes of their children and younger brothers and sisters more comfortable and attractive? The ladies of Lincolnton, N. C., led by Miss Hoke, Mrs. Bynum and others, have organized such a society. They will look after the comfort and beauty of their school house and grounds, will see that there is a small collection of books and papers suitable for children to read, and will do for the school and children many other things which only the loving care of the mother and the skilled hand of woman can accomplish. Let the women of every school district in North Carolina follow the example of Lincolnton. The North Carolina Journal of Education hopes within the next few years to reach every teacher and school officer in the state and a very large number of citizens interested in the improvement of our schools and other means of public education. We want ten thousand subscribers within the next six months. Let every one receiving a copy of this number help us by sending his own subscription and that of a friend. The Journal must depend on its friends for its support and its life, but it will not fail to deserve their support and to prove itself worthy of living. Let every public school in the state begin this year to equip itself with a small library of well selected books of the best literature for its pupils. Township committees have a perfect legal right to use a small amount of the school fund for this most necessary part of the equipment of the schools. For a few dollars forty or fifty of the best books may be put into the hands of the children, and it is impossible to estimate the good that might be accomplished in this way and at little expense. We shall have more to say about this next month. In the next number of this journal Prof. Moses will continue his article on reading, and a systematic discussion of other subjects of the elementary schools will be begun, the first of a series of typical lessons in North Carolina geography and history will appear, and a brief and clear digest of the school law will be given for the benefit of county and township school officers. A department of child study will also be added. No apology needs to be made for filling so much of our space this month with extracts from President Alderman's inaugural address. Every man and woman in North Carolina should read and reread this address; it would save them from the imposition of much error, cant and dema-gogism. These extracts are given with the hope that they may be read by some who have not read the address in full. Prof. Eben Alexander, minister to Greece for the last four years, has returned home and will resume his duties as professor of Greek at the University of North Carolina. The university and the state gladly welcome him home, for there are few better teachers than he, and all who know him love him. The Southern Educational Association holds its next meeting at New Orleans during the Christmas holidays. North Carolina should be largely represented.
