Book Description
In the early 1980s there had been an upsurge of public concern over the nuclear threat to Europe. Already saturated with nuclear weapons, Europe faced controversial new deployments and there was alarm over military strategies for nuclear war in the region. It is in this context that the idea of nuclear weapon-free zones had captured the popular imagination and became a political issue in Europe. Not only would such zones build confidence and raise the nuclear threshold, but they would be first steps towards a more comprehensive elimination of nuclear weapons. Originally published in 1983 Nuclear Disengagement in Europe probes the question of nuclear weapon-free zones in the region. Pugwash and SIPRI arranged a meeting at which an international team of lawyers, scientists, politicians and military experts gave background information and provided an appraisal of problems regarding the zone initiatives as well as benefits that would accrue. Possible elements in a European zone arrangement were elaborated on and procedures towards the establishment of such a zone were suggested.

Book Description
"The story from behind the scenes of how one small country in the South Pacific found the political will to say no to nuclear weapons. Written by former Prime Minister David Lange, a major participant, it is a personal eye witness account of the dramatic events of the late 1980s which saw New Zealand ban visits by foreign nuclear warships. "Nuclear free : the New Zealand way" tells how small scale protest turned into a popular movement and then into government action as one small country took the courageous step of refusing to buy into the great powers nuclear arms race." -- Back cover.

Book Description
"The idea of a Nordic nuclear-weapons-free zone has been around for almost 30 years, yet proposals to establish such a zone have made no headway. The Nordic nations are aware that recently their region has grown in military and strategic importance to NATO and the Warsaw Pact, and traditional Nordic concerns for preserving the low tension and stability of the area have led the Scandinavian countries to search for new ways to protect and enhance this special security condition. This paper explores the motivations, rationales, and support behind the initiatives for a nuclear-weapons-free zone in the region and the problems that may be countered in realizing such a zone."--Rand abstracts.

Book Description
In strategic studies and international relations, grand strategy is a frequently-invoked concept. Yet, despite its popularity, it is not well understood and it has many definitions, some of which are even mutually contradictory. This state of affairs undermines its usefulness for scholars and practitioners alike. Lukas Milevski aims to remedy this situation by offering a conceptual history of grand strategy in the English language, analysing its evolution from 1805 to the present day in the writings of its major proponents. In doing so, he seeks to clarify the meaning and role of the concept, both theoretically and practically, and shed light on its continuing utility today.

Book Description
In the past quarter century our world has hosted ninety-nine wars, twenty-nine of these are ongoing. The bill for maintaining huge stores of weapons and some 70 million people in uniform currently stands at $1.7 trillion a year. Of these wars, over 85 percent are not settled on the battlefield; they are fought to desperately hurting stalemates, eventually being turned over to diplomats and politicians who go in search of whatever face-saving outcomes may still be available. And yet, abandoning the conference table in favour of the battlefield is still justified when viewed as a last resort. In this brave and discerning book, Ernie Regehr, OC, explains the approaches and initiatives needed to steer away from the futility of global military effort. Combining four decades of experience in conflict zones, advising and leading diplomacy efforts, building NGOs and contributing to the adoption of the Responsibility to Protect Act by the World Assembly, Regehr boldly shows that political stability will never be issued from the barrel of a gun.
