Book Description
Excerpt from The Nature and Instrument of Regeneration Religious controversy, having its origin in the imperfection of human nature, is always attended with present evil; but all experience demonstrates that its ultimate effects have gene rally proved beneficial. The present work is, in a great measure, necessarily controversial; but the author has laboured to avoid, as much as possible, the spirit of mere controversy; as truth, and only truth, has been uniformly the object of his ardent pursuit. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Discourses on Regeneration The word salvation necessarily suggests the idea of some existing evil, from which deliverance'has either been effected, or is required. In its simple primary meaning, it has no exclusive reference to one description of evil or of deliverance mbre than to another. But in general use, it has become so very much appropriated to the deliverance revealed by the gospel, that we are apt to feel as if it were desecrated when we hear it applied to any preserva tion or rescue, whether personal or national, of a merely secular and temporary nature. Book Description
Excerpt from The Doctrine of Regeneration These words contain the foundation of all practical religion here, and happiness hereafter. It is the principal doctrine Christ, as a prophet, came to teach; and as a king, to work in the heart. The text proves the indispensable necessity of regeneration, by which I mean not a relative, but a real change of the subject, wrought in the complexion and inclinations of the soul. As in the restoring of health, there is a change made in the temper and humours of the body. As mankind were changed in Adam, from what they were in a state of creation; so men must be changed in Christ, from what they were in a state of corruption. As that change was not only relative, but real, and the relative first introduced by the real; so must this. The relation of a child of wrath, was founded upon the sin committed. Without a real change, there can be no relative. Being in Christ, as freed from condemnation, is always attended with a walking in the Spirit; and walking is not before living. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Regeneration Regeneration, according to the scriptural repre scutation of it, is a very different thing from all this. Neither orthodoxy, nor baptism, nor morality, nor outward reformation, nor the improvement of rea son, nor a visible profession, nor any degree of light to which the natural understanding may attain, answers to the conception of the new birth, as it lay in the minds of prophets and apostles. The change indicated by this term is real, not nominal; radical, not superficial; internal and Spiritual, rather than outward and carnal in a word; it is a change of the subject, and not of the name only. To be born again signifies nothing less than the infusion of a new principle of spiritual life into the soul, whereby it becomes both inclined and enabled to perform Spiritual actions, acceptable unto God. It signifies a re-impression of the Divine image upon the soul; the soul itself remaining the same in its essence, but becoming radically changed in its qualities, desires, and objects. Book Description
Excerpt from Regeneration Regeneration is the cardinal doctrine in the scheme of salvation. It is, indeed, the saving act. While it has never been overlooked, the difficulty of bringing it under discussion has probably been the reason for its being left somewhat in the background. Theological treatises generally give to this doctrine only one-third or one-fourth the space that is given to the atonement, and but a small portion of this is commonly given to regeneration proper.
