Excerpt from The Natural History of South Africa, Vol. 1 of 4 The series of volumes of which this is the first are intended to supply information about the ways and habits of the creatures of veld, forest, mountain, and stream, so that school teachers, senior pupils, and the general public may have a ready means of learning to distinguish friend from foe in the lower animal kingdom. Wherever civilised man penetrates he destroys the native animals and birds indiscriminately. His children are encouraged to sally forth with catapult, air gun, and shot gun and wantonly destroy the lives of innocent and often eminently useful creatures. He even encourages them to make collections of the eggs of wild birds, thereby diminishing the numbers of insectivorous birds which are of immense economic value to the country. When I think of my youthful days, I burn with shame and remorse, for, in the light of knowledge subsequently gained, I am conscious of having taken the lives of numbers of animals and birds of great economic value, and the lives of many others, although of little or no value economically, yet innocent of harm as far as man is concerned. From my earliest youth I have made an intimate study of the creatures of mountain, veld, forest, and stream in their native haunts. The results of some of these studies have already been published in book form in the Natural History of South Africa and Snakes of South Africa. My intention was to have published these volumes at an earlier date, but, owing to unforeseen circumstances, their publication has been held over. The results of several years of research and study of the birds of South Africa were recorded in a number of diaries. These records were lent to a naturalist friend with permission to take notes from them. Alas! He lost them all. It was a sad loss to me, resulting in further years of investigation. There are several species or kinds of Jumping or Elephant Shrews inhabiting South Africa. All of them are of great economic value to man, for the reason that their diet consists almost entirely of insect life which they seek on the ground, and under dead leaves and grass. Their sense of smell is exceedingly keen, enabling them to locate insects concealed from sight. In captivity we found they devoured with avidity almost any species of insect which we gave them.
