Excerpt from The Natural History Of Juan Fernandez And Easter Island, Vol. 3: Zoology The adult specimens agree in a general way with descriptions in the literature, as f. I. Seebohm's in Cat. Birds B. M. Vol. V, p. 223 (the plate, Nr. XIV, appears quite incorrect) and schalow's in Fauna Chilensis 1, p. 747, but they are more richly coloured with buff below than specimens from the main land available to me. The back has also a somewhat more olivaceous tint than in specimens from Chile. This may, however, be variable and perhaps disappears through abrasion. The young bird has rather large blackish apical spots on the otherwise buffcoloured feathers of the breast and anks, less ou the fore neck. The feathers of the upper back as well display the usual ju venile pattern with whitish shaft stripes and apical semilunar black spots. The wing-coverts have pale buffish shaft stripes and the upper tail-coverts narrow whitish shaft stripes. This description differs in several respects from the one communicated by schalow (l. He speaks of the lower side being >intensiv rost-braunlich, die einzelnen Federn mit dunklen Saumen, so dass eine dunkle, wellige Zeichnung entsteht. The young bird oi the present collection does not display any undulated pattern on the lower side and the solid shape of the apical spots seem to prevent such a pattern.
