Book Description
Western women have changed. You've noticed it, your friends have noticed it, and Joel Carberry noticed it. This book lays out the problems with modern U.S. women, the causes of those problems, and outlines specific examples showing that women are more privileged than men in western society. Why do women have it easier in life? What proof is there that that's even the case? What can you do about it? The answers to those questions, and more, are contained within these pages.Basing his conclusions on research, personal experience, and real-world stories, Joel relays his personal interactions with women as they relate to his points. Some stories are short, some are long, but all are true. Beyond his personal interactions, Joel discusses several topical talking points spouted by so-called "women's rights advocates".

Writing the Modern Family
Author: Roberta Garrett
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1786605198
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 200
Book Description
Although a large body of work has emerged which addresses neoliberal representations of the family in other cultural forms (such as parenting advice programmes) little has been written specifically on the family and contemporary literature. This book examines the growing body of autobiographical and fictional writing on family and parenting issues in Anglo-American culture from the late 1990s to the present day. The book looks closely at six distinct genres which have arisen during this time frame: the misery memoir, the mum’s lit popular novel, the maternal confessional, ‘dads’ lit, the dysfunctional domestic novel and the family noir. Writing the Modern Family will examine the way these burgeoning areas of British and American writing respond to a neoliberal public discourse in which a ‘parenting deficit’ rather than economic and structural disadvantage, is responsible for increasing inequality in child welfare and achievement. In evaluating these forms and their relationship to neoliberal culture, the book will also consider the complex interrelationship between these genres.

A Victorian Muse
Author: Julia Straub
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1441180680
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 322
Book Description
The figure of Dante's Beatrice can be seen as a cultural phenomenon or myth during the nineteenth century, inspiring a wide variety of representations in literature and the visual arts. This study looks at the cultural afterlife of Beatrice in the Victorian period in remarkably different contexts. Focusing on literary representations and selected examples from the visual arts, this book examines works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Christina Rossetti, George Eliot, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Walter Pater as well as by John Ruskin, Maria Rossetti and Arthur Henry Hallam. Julia Straub's analysis shows how the various representations of Beatrice in literature and in the visual arts reflect in meaningful ways some of the central social and aesthetic concerns of the Victorian period, most importantly its discourse on gender. This study offers fascinating insights into the Victorian reception of Dante by exploring the powerful appeal of his muse.
