The past history of the soil greatly affects its mechanical and mineralogical composition. How it will affect the distribution of the plant-food constituents is not always obvious. For some time investigators have recognized that the groups of various sized particles ofa soil may differ in chemical composition. Considerable attention has been given to certain phases of the subject; but it has not as a whole received the detailed study that it deserves. Much of the analytical work that has been done upon the mechanical separates of soils has been by treatment with some conventional strength of hydrochloric acid. Excerpt from Colorimetric, Turbidity, and Titration Methods Used in Soil Investigations The study of the solubility of the minerals of the soil, as maintain ing the soluble mineral plant food constituents in the soil moisture, is of the greatest significance. The solubility and hydrolysis of the ordinary rock-forming minerals, not only in water, but in solutions of various electrolytes, is therefore 'of great importance in throwing light upon the solubility of the minerals of the soil in pure water, in water charged more or less with carbonic acid, and in the solutions formed by the various fertilizer salts. The solubility of the rock forming minerals, though continuous, is slow and, comparatively speaking, slight, and here again the determination Of very small quantities of soluble salts is requisite. In addition to the solubility of the common rock-forming minerals, the slight solubility Of the phosphates of the soil, such as iron, aluminum, or calcium phosphates, in pure water and in solutions-of the various fertilizer salts, can also be studied by means of these methods. In this way it is possible to gain valuable information concerning the behavior of these substances in the soil and the effect Of fertilizer salts upon them. Can as a rule serve no useful purpose in the chemical analysis of soils in the humid region is strikingly shown in the investigation made by R. H. Loughridge, in 1873 (am. J. Sci., Jan. 1874, p. He found that in the case of a very generalized soil of the Mississippi uplands, solution by strong acid practically ceased beyond the sediment of mm. Hydraulic value, cor responding to a diameter of about mm. Although the general applicability of this particular limit may be fairly questioned, the wide margins between the fractions and renders it pretty certain that within the limit of the former we shall find all that is of any value to plants for their supply of mineral plant food. But for the sake of comparability with analyses made under a different rule, the grain-sizes of to 1 and 1 to 2 mm. Diameter should always be quantitatively determined.
