Book Description
Excerpt from The Marine Decapod Crustacea of California: With Special Reference to the Decapod Crustacea Collected by the United States Bureau of Fisheries Steamer "Albatross" In Connection With the Biological Survey of San Francisco Bay During the Years 1912 1913 The fact that much of the literature dealing with the California decapods is to be found only in older publications, now out of print and in a large measure inaccessible to the average student, and that the more recent and very excellent works covering the region under discussion are either limited in circulation and consequently difficult to obtain or are very restricted in scope, prompted the expansion of this report upon the decapod Crustacea collected by the Albatross in the course of this survey of San Francisco Bay into a handbook of the marine decapod Crustacea of California. Marine Decapod Crustacea
Author: Gary C.B. Poore
Publisher: CSIRO PUBLISHING
ISBN: 1486311806
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1771
Book Description
Decapod crustaceans, shrimps, crabs, prawns and their allies are highly visible and important members of marine environments. They are among the most charismatic of marine animals, inhabiting beaches, rocky shores and the deep sea, hiding under stones, burrowing in the sediment and nestling in among algae and many other microhabitats. However, most are difficult to identify by the specialist and amateur naturalist alike. Marine Decapod Crustacea explains the anatomical features necessary for differentiating taxa and includes diagnoses and identification keys to all 189 families and 2121 genera of marine Decapoda. Many decapods have vivid colours, which are showcased in a selection of spectacular photographs of many representative species. This volume provides an entry to the literature for taxonomists, naturalists, consultants, ecologists, teachers and students wanting to identify local faunas and understand this diverse group

The Biology of Decapod Crustacean Larvae
Author: Klaus Anger
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9789026518287
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 262
Book Description
About 90 per cent of the 10,000 known species of the Crustacea Decapoda live in oceans and adjacent coastal and estuarine regions, and most of them pass through a complex life history comprising a benthic (juvenile-adult) and a planktonic (larval) phase. The larvae show a wide array of adaptations to the pelagic environment, including modifications in their functional morphology, anatomy, the molting cycle, nutrition, growth, chemical composition, metabolism, energy partitioning, ecology and behaviour.;All these traits are reviewed in this volume, attempting to promote an integrated, multidisciplinary view of the biology of larval Decapoda and other crustacean taxa. Emphasis is placed on the lesser-known anatomical, bioenergetic and ecophysiological aspects of larval life, as morphology has already been extensively documented. Changes in biological parameters (for example, rates of feeding, growth, metabolism) are shown in successive developmental stages, within individual stages, and as responses to environmental factors. Particular attention is paid to interrelationships between intrinsic phenomena (molting cycle, organogenesis, growth) and the overlaying effects of extrinsic factors (for example, food, temperature, salinity, pollution). Concluding from the available data, major bias and gaps in present knowledge of larval biology are identified and discussed as to their potential significance in future research.
