Book Description
Eminent musicologist H. C. Robbins Landon rediscovers the composer through an accessible and musically informed biography. Presenting documentation about Vivaldi discovered after the Baroque revival in the 1930s, Robbins Landon explores a fascinating life: Vivaldi was a Catholic priest who gave up celebrating Mass almost as soon as he was ordained; we was a lifelong invalid, but could travel all over Europe when it suited him; he was a dazzling violin virtuoso but died a pauper. Robbins Landon masterfully integrates musical analysis and biography, using each to illuminate the other and to unravel the riddle of Vivaldi's identity and extraordinary gift. This book includes illustrations of eighteenth-century Venice and several newly translated letters.

Book Description
The eight verse anthems in this edition constitute the only full scores of works in Blow's hand that survive in this abundant genre. The scores are located in two manuscripts that are now parts of the collections at Christ Church, Oxford, and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The Oxford manuscript includes five anthems from the 1670s, and each displays a variety of structural and musical-rhetoric procedures, making them ideal representatives of Blow's multifaceted early style. The Cambridge manuscript dates from ca. 1704 and contains three late works on a much larger scale. As a group, the later anthems require considerably greater virtuosity from the solo singers, and individual verse sections grow both longer and more numerous. As representative examples within a much larger repertoire, the works selected for this edition help to reveal important facets in the career of the first person to hold the title, Composer of the Chapel Royal.

Book Description
Manchester Beethoven studies presents ten original chapters by scholars with close ties to the University of Manchester. It throws new light on many aspects of Beethoven’s life and works, with a special emphasis on early or little-known compositions such as his concert aria Erste Liebe, his String Quintet Op. 104 and his folksong settings. Biographical elements are prominent in a wide-ranging reassessment of his religious attitudes and beliefs, while Charles Hallé, founder of the Manchester-based Hallé Orchestra, is revealed to have been a tireless and energetic promoter of Beethoven’s music in the later nineteenth century.
