Book Description
Excerpt from The New Americans Happily his conception of what distinction and dignity included for a man like himself took in a great deal; nearly everything, in fact, except tolerance and a sense of humour. He had been gifted with a robust frame which he had been at pains to break to manly accomplishments: he could ride and shoot, fence, box, wrestle, and swim with proficiency; he openly despised any man not a consumptive who could not; and these consumptive he despised, instinctively, in secret. He had inherited a strong, dull intelligence in which he never found anything which he had not first put there; but from his childhood good masters had been offered him; he had spent a certain number of hours every day in adding to the stock of notions they had given him, and it was not his habit to forget what he had once learned. Neither was it his habit to unlearn anything: what had once obtained lodgment in his head formed an insuperable obstacle to the passage of everything not consistent with it; and the considerable library he had collected at Estcourt served mainly to dress out his preconceptions in the foppery of scholarship. He had been a young buck in his day, looking at himself seriously in the glass. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Americans All: Stories of American Life of to-Day In the years before the war, when we had more time for light pursuits, a favorite sport of reviewers was to hunt for the Great American Novel. They gave tongue here and there, and pursued the quarry with great excitement in various dirce tions, now north, now south, now west, and the inevitable disappointment at the end of the chase never deterred them from starting off on a fresh scent next day. But in spite of all the frenzied pursuit, the game sought, the Great American Novel, was never captured. Will it ever be captured? The thing they sought was a book that would be so broad, so typical, so true that it would stand as the adequate expres sion in fiction of American life. Did these tireless hunters ever stop to ask themselves, what is the Great French Novel? What is the Great English Novel? And if neither of these nations has produced a single book which embodies their national life, why should we expect that our life, so much more diverse in its elements, so multifarious in its aspects, could ever be summed up within the covers of a single book? Book Description
Excerpt from History of the American People Another aim is to unfold and display the neglected history of many parts of our country. In the preparation of the book, the archives of many States, old manuscripts, State and private libraries, have been carefully consulted. Nearly every book that historians recognize as an authority has been studied, and in cases of conflict the truth has been diligently sought for. The fact is recognized that many fables or myths have crept into the sacred domain of history; but this has not been made a warrant for an indiscriminate rejection of the many truths that incredulity has attacked. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the United States During recent years there has been much written and much said about making the study of history and civics in the ele mentary schools something more than committing to memory dates, facts and events. Many newspapers and educational journals and many of those educators Who talk publicly on school questions have criticised severely the results secured from the time devoted to history and civics in the grammar schools. The method used and the lack of proper preparation on the part of the teacher have been held responsible for the poor results secured in these subjects. It has been customary to hold the teacher responsible for the method used and for her poor preparation, and thus to place the entire blame on her. Many have promptly and justly replied that they cannot be expected to expend from two to three thousand dollars in securing a higher education for the purpose of receiving the small salaries paid in the elementary schools. They have also replied - and this is even more to the point - that not being specialists in history and civics, they cannot, With any degree of success, teach these subjects by the topical method When every grammar school history text-book in print adopts, almost entirely, the cut and-dried chronological-event method. In relation to all these conditions, special attention is called to the fact that in this book the topical treatment is used Without any reserve What ever. No teacher can use this book as a text-book and use any other than the topical method, and no pupil can study this book without becoming interested in the real spirit of our history and having cultivated in him the desire to perform to the best of his ability the duties of American citizenship. Book Description
Excerpt from The Plain Story of American History MY purpose in writing this book is expressed in the title. I wish that it may be a plain story of the achievement of human beings in that part of the Western Hemisphere which is now the United States of America. To relate the main facts clearly and broadly, rather than to describe many detailed occurrences, has been constantly in my mind. The story here presented may be taken as an introduc tion for a wider study of our history. It has been my aim to use simple but strong language, and to place the emphasis of the book on human actions. But much attention has been given to social history, and in two chapters the outlines of American government have been presented. I hope the book will prove neither hard nor easy for pupils. If it is received as a straightforward story, drawing forth the earnest efforts of capable pupils and making for the suc cess of faithful teachers, it will be a source of pleasure for the author, repaying him for many days and nights of careful study of our national history. More especially, I wish that the book may serve, along with many other excellent works of similar scope, to give to the American youth a better appreciation of the glorious history of their native land, and to create in them a warmer purpose to serve their country and promote its progress. Book Description
Excerpt from In the Days of Washington: A Story of the American Revolution Cornelius De Vries, a well-to-do and retired merchant, occupied a broad-armed chair at one Side of the table that stood in the middle of the room. He was a very stately old gentleman of sixty, with a clean-shaven and wrinkled face. He wore a wig, black stockings, a coat and vest of broadcloth, and low Shoes with Silver buckles. His features betrayed his Dutch origin, as did also the long-stemmed pipe he was smoking, and the glass of Holland schnapps at his elbow.
