Book Description
Excerpt from The Magazine of History, Vol. 4: With Notes and Queries; September, 1906 There exists no question that the battle of Harlem was fought, either to the north or the south of the western portion of Harlem flats; that the Americans occupied certain heights; and that the assault of the English was made by one body and that the larger portion, from the plain below along these heights; at the same time a smaller body gained the top of these heights by ascending a ravine from-the Hudson river bank at some distance from the main line of attack. The whole question then relates to the locality of Harlem Heights, and at this late date, in the absence of positive proof, the locality must either continue to remain in doubt, or must be decided by circumstantial evidence, which is often the most reliable. Before presenting the evidence on which I propose to base my argument it will be necessary to make a digression. Book Description
Excerpt from The Magazine of History, With Notes and Queries, Vol. 3: February 1906 I was sent by the chief editor to Springfield, Ill., to report a speech of Mr. Lincoln against the repeal of the Missouri Compromise. AS I was the reporter of the principal Whig newspaper in the State (mr. Lincoln himself belonging to that party), I was the recipient of some local attention when I arrived in Springfield, and was presented to Mr. Lincoln before he made his speech. I had never even heard his name before. At first glance his appearance was not attractive. He was tall, bony, angular, and destitute of all the graces except a winning cast of countenance with which he greeted all comers; but that counted for much. Kindliness and honesty beamed from his eyes and from every _'wrinkle on his face. All this I took in at my first meeting with him, but I did not expect much of a speech from him. Book Description
Excerpt from The Magazine of History With Notes and Queries, Vol. 4: Extra Numbers 13-16 Responding to the flattering invitation extended by this Society, ' I come tonight to recall the image of one who a century ago was the honored chief magistrate of this commonwealth - who acted a conspicuous part in our colonial struggle for independence - who was numbered among the earliest and the most zealous Sons of Liberty - whose reputation, both civil and military, was free from all alloy - who bore himself on every occasion as a courageous man and a worthy citizen - who sleeps in an unmarked grave within cannon-range of this Hall in which we are now assembled to render tribute to his virtues - and of whom, so far as our information ex tends, we possess no portrait save such as his own brave hand has painted on the historic canvas.
