Excerpt from The Lyrical Poems of Dante Alighieri To assist the student m ascertaining this internal mystical sense has been my object; and with this view I have studied to make the translation correspond to the Italian with scrupulous exactness, line for line, and almost word for word; the outward and literal sense being the first indispensable step towards a right understanding of the interior sense concealed under an allegory. Book Description
Excerpt from The New Life of Dante Alighieri The New Life. I. In that part of the book of my memory before which little can be read is found a rubric which sayeth, Incipit Vita Nova. Under which rubric I find the words written which it is my intention to copy into this little book, - and if not all of them, at least their meaning. II. Nine times now, since my birth, had the heaven of light turned almost to the same point in its own gyration, when first appeared before mine eyes the glorious Lady of my mind, who was called Beatrice by many who knew not wherefore she was so called. Book Description
Excerpt from The Paradiso of Dante Alighieri Subject matter (1-12) and invocation (13-36). The sun is in the equinoctial point. It is midday at Purgatory and midnight at Jerusalem, when Dante sees Beatrice gazing at the sun and instinctively imitates her gesture, looking away from her and straight at the sun (37-54). The light glows as though God had made a second sun, and Dante now turns once more to Beatrice who is gazing heavenward. As he looks his human nature is transmuted to the quality of heaven and he knows not whether he is still in the flesh or no (55-75). They pass through the sphere of fire and hear the harmonies of heaven, but Dante is La gloria di colui che tutto move per l' universo penetra, e risplende in una parte piu, e meno altrove. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
