Excerpt from The Loose Leaf System of Laboratory Notes, for Guidance in the Dissection and Elementary Study of Animal Types Instructors in biology very generally direct the laboratory work by means of written or printed guides placed in the hands of the student. These are sometimes hastily prepared for the occasion, and come from the mimeograph or typewriter abounding in misprints and various other errors. If more carefully elaborated, the sheets furnished the student at various times are not uniform in size and will not fit in with any system of notes which he may be keeping. The Loose Leaf guides are the results of several years' experience in directing zoological work in high school and college laboratories. The sheets outlining the work on each type of animal are separate, so that they may be incorporated with the student's drawings and notes on that particular type. The recorded information on the subject is thus collected together, not only simplifying at the time the work of studying the specimen, taking notes, and indexing the drawings, but making future reference to the records an easy matter. Then, too, the laboratory guides being thus bound in with the student's notes, do not become scattered or lost. The instructor who has mastered his subject only fairly well might easily dispense with the use of a regular text book of zoology in connection with these guides. We should study things, not about things. Collateral reading assigned by the instructor and simple lectures or talks on various phases of the particular type of animal life in hand will, however, stimulate and encourage the student to investigation on his own account. The field, the brook, the woods have attractions more for the average student of zoology than any text book on the subject. But he must be so directed or trained that he will learn to see what he looks at and interpret correctly what he sees. A biological survey - classes in botany cooperating - of a small selected area is an excellent plan for developing nature students. As a matter of course, aquaria and terraria ought to form part of the equipment of every zoological laboratory. Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual for Elementary Zoology This laboratory manual was prepared for the class in elementary zoology in the University of Chicago, and has been used in this course for some time. In the three months' time allotted for the course, nearly all of the work given in sections I to XII, inclusive, is completed, with the exception of the muscular and skeletal systems of the frog. The remaining sections have been added for publication because they seem to the author to be essential for a complete course in general zoology. The directions have been written entirely from the material, although, of course, many textbooks have been consulted throughout. An attempt has been made, not merely to give explicit directions for the study of the material, but also to point out the relation of each section of the work to the general principles of biology and to make clear why each particular kind of material has been selected. The sections are given, naturally, in the order which the author thinks most logical, but they can be shifted at the will of the instructor. Our experience, extending over many years of trial of both methods, has shown that starting the course with the dissection of a complex animal is much more satisfactory than introducing the student at the start to the lower invertebrates, for the reason that the simplicity of the latter cannot be appreciated and understood except with reference to completely differentiated animals. Any vertebrate would serve the purpose, but the arthropods are in general unsuitable because they introduce the problem of heteronomous segmentation for which the beginner is not prepared. Many teachers will object that the instructions arc too detailed and that it is better pedagogy to compel the student to work out things by himself; but the large amount of ground which must be covered in a relatively short time and the impossibility of providing sufficient laboratory assistants for the large classes with which we have to deal necessitate detailed directions. The student pursuing the modern college curriculum simply docs not have time to carry out an original investigation on the anatomy of an animal; and unless he is provided with detailed directions, instructors and assistants are overburdened with the task of explaining to him what he is looking at, what to do next, etc. There is no reason why this extra work cannot be avoided by including these explanations in the manual. Excerpt from Nature Study With Common Things: An Elementary Laboratory Manual Five or six blackberries per pupil. For this allow at least one quart box for twenty pupils. Pins; sharp knives; small pieces of white blotting paper. If possible, have pieces of bramble to show stern, thorns, leaves, and the old hull, or calyx, from which the berries have been picked or have fallen. This can be procured in the summer from wild blackberry vines and dried. The leaves may be dried on them also, or may be removed and pressed. By cutting stems in four or five inch lengths while they are fresh, they can be packed in a small box and transported without trouble. If the stems are not thoroughly dry before packing, they w1ll mold. In packing sprays With the calyx it is advisable to wrap each separately in a bit of paper, otherwise they will be badly damaged in the unpacking.
