The situation in the sheep industry was somewhat better than in 1927 and was one of the most profitable years on record. The relatively unsatisfactory conditions in the hog industry were more than 0 set by the favorable conditions in the cattle industry. Book Description
Excerpt from The Livestock Review for 1927 Prices responded to the decreased supply of calves, but this reduction was not sufficient to make a price advance that corresponded with that of cattle. The calf market followed its usual seasonal trend with top veal prices at Chicago reaching per 100 pounds in September, as compared with a top of $16 in 1926. The average cost of calves for slaughter averaged for the year as against for 1926. The advance in prices, which was in part balanced by the decreased supply, resulted in a total income to producers from calves slaughtered under Federal inspection of about more than in 1926. (see Table The higher prices attracted beef calves to 'market rather freely from some areas. These calves met a good demand from killers and feeders, the outlet being broadened by the scarcity Of mature feeding cattle. Book Description
Excerpt from The Livestock Situation: October 23, 1939 The weekly rate of mill consumption of apparel wool in the United States in August was 12 percent higher than in July and was the highest rate reported since March 1937. Consumption in the first 8 months of this year was about 50 percent larger than in those months last year and was almost 20 percent larger than the 8-month average for the 10 years 1928-37. The building up of inventories of manufactured goods may have been an important factor in maintaining mill consumption at recent high levels. In view of prospects for further improvement in business conditions in the fall and winter months, domestic mill consumption of wool is likely to continue at a fairly high level during the remainder of 1939. Book Description
Excerpt from The Livestock Situation: July 19, 1939 Prices of most kinds of slaughter cattle were steady to higher in late June and early July, after declining sharply from April through early June. Pasture conditions in most areas were greatly improved by rains in June. Range conditions showed little improvement during June, as sharp declines in Southwestern and inter-mountain areas largely offset improvement in the Great Plains States. Except in some of the Western States, drought conditions reported during May have been relieved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Livestock and Meat Situation, Vol. 114: January 1961 Market supplies of fed cattle this winter probably will be a little larger than last, but grass cattle will provide much of the expected increase in total cattle slaughter. The number of cattle and calves on feed October 1, 1960, in 26 feeding States was only 1 percent larger than October 1959. Since then, marketings of fed steers and heifers have been down slightly. Feeder cattle sales and shipments indicate the number placed on feed since October l was probably about the same as last fall. Hence, the number of cattle and calves on feed January 1 will likely be close to last January. This winter, cattle prices-including fed cattle -will likely continue close to or a little above current prices.
