Excerpt from The Lily of the Valley, And, Lost Illusions I yield to your wishes. It is the privilege of the women whom we love more than they love as to make the men who love them ignore the ordinary rules of common-sense. To smooth the frown upon their brow, to soften the pout upon their lips, what obstacles we miraculously overcome! We shed our blood, we risk our future! Excerpt from The Lily of the Valley; Or Margie and I: And Other Poems As through our Southern land they roam But Oh I wish that the War was o'er That we heard no more the cannon's roar That Peace was ours once more. Ah! Now I think I hear The sound Of those bugles clear, And the tread Of bare feet that may never Press the native soil, that now they stain With crimson drops that write, In characters Of light, Their record on each Southern plain. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lily of the Valley (Le Lys Dans La Vallee): And Other Stories This, however, and some minor matters, may be left to the reader to find out and appreciate. The most interesting point, and the most debatable, is the character of the heroine with, in a lesser degree, that of the hero. Of M. Felix de Vandenesse it is not necessary to say very much, be cause that capital letter from Madame de Manerville (one of the very best things that Balzac ever wrote, and exhibiting a sharpness and precision of mere writing which he too fre quently lacked) does fair, though not complete, justice on the young man. The lady, who was not a model of excellence herself, perhaps did not perceive - for it does not seem to have been in her nature to conceal it through kindness - that he was not only as she tells him, wanting in tact, but also wanting, and that execrably, in taste. M. De Vandenesse, I think, ranks in Balzac's list of good heroes; at any rate he saves him later from a fate which he rather richly deserves, and introduces him honorably in other places. But he was not a nice young man. His pawing and timid advances on Madame de Mortsauf, and his effusive kissing and telling in reference to Lady Dudley, both smack of the worst sides of Rousseau they deserve not so much moral reprehension as physical kicking. It is no wonder that Madeleine de Mortsauf turned a cold shoulder on him; and it is an addition to his demerits that he seems to have thought her unjust in doing so. Book Description
Excerpt from Lilies The family of true Lilies, by which we mean members of the genus Lilium, is a comparatively small one, being represented by about seventy known species and nearly twice as many varieties. Although three countries - China, Japan, and California - provide between them considerably more than half the number known, the genus is distributed over almost the whole of the temperate regions of both hemispheres, and while five species are known in sub-tropical countries, there is no record of any true Lily having been found in the Southern Hemisphere. Most species actually in cultivation come from Japan, to which country about fifteen are referred North America accounts for seventeen, of which the Western States provide the greater number; in Europe eight species are known; whilst from the Himalayas there are four, Siberia three, and Burma four.
