The Life of W. J. Fox
Author: Richard Garnett
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780265193181
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 374
Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of W. J. Fox: Public Teacher Social Reformer, 1786-1864 The period covered by Fox's life, 1786-1864, is one of the most confused in our social history. We see the social organisation of the preceding century wearing out like an old garment, being patched up anew, and giving out afresh at the seams. The aristocratic governing system holds to gether, like some old-fashioned dam with stout and rotting timbers assailed by the long pent-up force of accumulating waters; and indeed for over sixty years (1786-1848) it defied both the democratic pressure near at hand and the back wash of the Eumpean revolutionary movements abroad. Scientific discoveries, the growth of the manufactories, and the exploitation of the industrial masses during and after the Napoleonic Wars were followed in England by a prolonged economic crisis, the final degradation of the agricultural labourer, and the battle of the land-owning class to maintain its privileges, and keep political power in its hands. Simultaneously with the rending and enforced expansion of the social order, the old faiths were confronted with new, ugly problems, and the failure of ancient creeds to find an answer for teeming social evils undermined the foundations of religious belief. Problems of reform, administrative, economic, educational, ecclesi astical, agitated all thinking heads. Literature was filled with social polemics, and writers as spiritually alien as Shelley and Dickens, Bentham and Ruskin, Carlyle and Disraeli, all were busy criticising, renovating or demolish ing the old social structure. Like yeast in the national dough the pre and early Victorian reformers, dissatisfied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Cosmopolitan Lives on the Cusp of Empire
Author: Jane Haggis
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319527487
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
This book looks back to the period 1860 to 1950 in order to grasp how alternative visions of amity and co-existence were forged between people of faith, both within and resistant to imperial contact zones. It argues that networks of faith and friendship played a vital role in forging new vocabularies of cosmopolitanism that presaged the post-imperial world of the 1950s. In focussing on the diverse cosmopolitanisms articulated within liberal transnational networks of faith it is not intended to reduce or ignore the centrality of racisms, and especially hegemonic whiteness, in underpinning the spaces and subjectivities that these networks formed within and through. Rather, the book explores how new forms of cosmopolitanism could be articulated despite the awkward complicities and liminalities inhabited by individuals and characteristic of cosmopolitan thought zones.
