Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Timothy Pickering, Vol. 1 From various causes the Biography of colonel timothy pickering has been delayed until most of his friends and other contemporaries who felt a per: sonal regard for him have passed away; but the active part which he took, and the important offices which he held, first in the American Revolution, next in the Cabinets of President Washington and President John Adams, and afterwards as a member successively of the Senate and of the House of Representatives of the United States, give to the record of his life a permanent interest. He was likewise several times employed by President Washington on missions to treat with different tribes of Indians. Some of his official papers, and portions of his private correspond ence with eminent men of his day, are of much value in relation to the history of the United States; and his efforts to induce the Connecticut Settlers in the valley of Wyoming to submit to the jurisdiction of Pennsylvania connect him intimately with the his tory of that State.
