Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of the Reverend Thomas Bowman Stephenson: Founder of the Children's Home and of the Wesley Deaconess Institute In telling of Dr. Stephenson's doings as a leader of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, I have remem bered that the book may be read by many who have little knowledge of our affairs, and I have inserted brief explanations for their benefit, though I have been conscious that these might well appear stale and unprofitable to readers who know the organiza tion and life of our Church as well as I do myself. I have not attempted to write the history of Eng land with regard to social reform, and especially with regard to children, during the last half-century. But I have felt that it needed to be written, and that when it is written, Dr. Stephenson will be seen not only to have rendered service of the highest value, but also to have contributed important and, indeed, vital ideas which have enriched the conceptions and enlarged the vision of the social workers of our day. Book Description
"With this volume the publication of A History of the Methodist Church in Great Britain comes to its appointed end. The project of writing it was initiated by the Methodist Conference of 1953, and the lapse of time since then has made it possible to include at appropriate points the results of the continuing research into the origins and nature of Methodism; but 'the chance and changes of this mortal life', which are bound to impinge on the progress of so complex an enterprise, together with the heavy involvement of all the contributors in ecclesiastical, ecumenical and academic affairs, have made this period much longer than the General Editors would have wished." -- From the Preface

Book Description
This book explores the economic, religious, political and personal forces that led to some 80,000 British children being sent to Canada between 1867 and 1915. How did this come about? What were the motives and methods of the people involved? Why did it come to an end? What effects did it have on the children involved and what eventually became of them? These are the questions Roy Parker explores in this meticulously researched work. His book - humane and highly professional - will capture and hold the interest of many: the academic, the practitioner and the general reader.

The works will prove to be an invaluable resource to scholars, students, academics and specialist and public libraries, as well as to a wider range of church, intellectual and general historians.
