Combe remained only six days in London, and on the night of the 23d June 1840 sailed in the Koyal Victoria for Leith, and landed at Granton Pier on the night of the 25th. The weather had been dark and gloomy during the passage, and the first vision of his native city and its precincts was not a bright one even for a traveller who rejoiced in his return; and Combe was not in that mood.
