It has been my endeavour throughout to discover, from the indications left by himself, on what lines he would probably have constructed the work had he lived to complete it, and especially, where it was at all possible, to allow him to tell his own story, in his own way, and in his own words. With but very few exceptions every letter or paper included or quoted in these volumes was found in the box marked "Materials for the book," which was entrusted to my care by Charles Mathews's family after his death.
