Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: March 16, 1922 Under these headings, the Plymouth Western Evening Herald of February 2ud, ult., publishes a communication from Elder Harvey D. Hansen, one of the two missionaries recently mobbed while holding an Open-air meeting in that historic town. The Plymouth paper, by way of introduction, says: Since it is the policy of the Herald to give both Sides, we have consented to publish a denial of Miss Agnes Lister's story of her experience among the Mormons, ' written by Mr. H. D. Hansen, a missionary now in Plymouth. And then follows Elder Hansen's denial: It is by no means improbable that the name Agnes C. Lister is as fictitious as the story. I was born and raised in Utah, have traveled extensively throughout the Western States, and I testify that the accusations against the Mormon Church are vicious, inconsistent, and maliciously false. The root of prejudice against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints arises from the claim we set forth in the official name. The Church has been opposed from its infancy, not only because of plural marriage. The greatest persecution was endured before polygamy was practiced. The Prophet Joseph Smith was murdered in cold blood by a mob led by a Protestant minister because he bore a testimony similar to the Apostle Paul that he seen God. Because of upholding this testimony, sealed with his blood, we are slandered, misrepresented, and persecuted in some sections of the country. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: June 22, 1922 The services began with the congregation and choir singing the hymn O ye mountains high, after which the choir sang an anthem. President Penrose, in announcing Elder Roberts as the speaker, in formed the congregation that he had lately been called to preside over the Eastern States mission and expected to leave within a very short time. Elder Roberts said it is truly a pleasure to meet with the saints in the Tabernacle. He declared he was grateful for the appoint ment he had received, but said he was fearful that his friends may be disappointed in what he would be able to accomplish. It is with a most humble spirit, he said, that he undertakes this work. He said he realized it is a great, work as the mission includes twelve states and the District of Columbia, with a population of thirty-three million. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 16, 1922 President Penrose said he had been blessed with acquaintance with several of the heads of this Church, and he declared all were men of God. He said he enjoyed the confidence of President Grant and was glad that he was able to pray for him and help him in any way possible. The speaker said he had his certificate of ordination as an elder in this Church with him. According to that, he said, he was ordained to that office in the Priesthood on January 6th, 1851. Soon after that he started to preach the Gospel without purse or script and did so for ten years. He was told in those early days that a man was fortunate in being able to wear out in the service of the Lord. He said his eyesight had failed, but was glad he had been able to wear it out for the Lord. In regard to the liberties of the Latter-day Saints, President Penrose said he had never been forced nor coerced to do a single thing he did not want to do. He declared that everything he had done had been done voluntarily, and that all his remaining days are at the Lord's service. The speaker said he was glad to be able to attend conference once more and partake of the spirit thereof. He then referred to the rewards which await those who are faithful, and closed by bearing his testimony to the truth of the Gospel. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: March 9, 1922 I appreciate your frankness and the friendliness that prompts your suggestion that in justice to myself and my friends we should see that the evil stories that are being published about us in Great Britain be effectively rebutted. It may interest you to know that during my more than two years in Great Britain I was unable to find a single newspaper that would Open its columns to me to refute the slanders that were repeated from time to time about my people. I realise that many people in Great Britain believe that our mission in that land is to inveigle young girls into the Church, and ship them to Utah for improper purposes. That falsehood has been published many times during the years that are passed, but the evidence to prove it has never been produced, for the simple reason than it cannot be. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: August 24, 1922 As I sat alone the following Sunday afternoon, my folks having gone to meeting, I began to reflect on my condition. I remembered the advice that had been given me by my mother a week before, and decided to follow it. I locked the door, and for the first time in my life knelt down and began to pray to my Heavenly Father. I had always bowed in prayer with the family, but had never prayed alone. I was thoroughly in earnest. I appealed to the Eternal Father just as a child appeals to his earthly parent, the substance of my prayer being Lord, what wilt thou have me to do I cannot describe what followed all that I can say is this: The Lord convinced me as thoroughly as if he had spoken to me by his own voice that it was his will that I should become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I arose from my knees with a burning desire in my heart to be baptized, a desire which was gratified a few days later - March 2md, 1872. The step cost me my job, but I succeeded in finding another. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: February 16, 1922 Hope, then, is a precious thing to have. It is the mainstay and dependance of a happy life. It is the grand treasure that we need, the pearl for which no price is too dear. Its value cannot be computed in pounds shillings and pence; yet it is within the reach of everyone of us, without money and without price. In fact, it is a treasure which God has given to every son and daughter of Adam and Eve, and we sometimes make it do service in promoting our happiness. Jews, Christians, heathens, all possess this gift from God, and are more or less contented and happy so long as their lives are passed under its beneficent influ ence; but the trouble is we do not or cannot always exercise a vigorous hope. Some of us are full of hopefulness so long as we are sailing the sea of life in fair weather, but once let storms or disappointments fall to our lot and we send before the winds with fear and worry in our hearts. There are some people, however, who seem to be always full of hope. They see clear through the darkest cloud to the silver lining on the other side of it. There is nothing in this life that does not have something of a bright side to it, and they always keep their eyes fixed on the lighted part. Their's is a hope that does not get threadbare, it does not wear out though day and year in and out it is in con stant service. Time has no power to tarnish it, but it grows brighter and brighter the more it is used as time progresses. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: January 5, 1922 Our third article reads: We 'believe that through the atone ment of Christ, all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel. In other words we do not believe that a mere profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will save people. We believe that as we are saved in this life by our industry, by our intelligence, by our labor, by our works, so will we be saved in the kingdom of our Father, when the battle of life is ended, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, upon which salvation is promised. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: February 23, 1922 Three thousand years ago the Israelites, being warned by a vision, went forth to wander for forty years in the Wilderness. In more recent times, indeed almost within the memory of living men, the Mormons, led also by a vision, went forth into a wilder ness which they have caused to blossom as the rose. I hold no brief for the religious beliefs of the founders of the Mormon Church - they may, for all my knowledge to the contrary.
