Excerpt from The Knickerbocker, or New-York Monthly Magazine, 1857, Vol. 49 I raised my eyes to the blue sky, to the deep mountain regions. I raised my heart, also, and there alone, sweetly alone, in the purple hour, in the gold-and-purple hour, I gave a name to my treasure, to my glory, to my monarch of the stratas, to my statue wrought into grandeur, into gentle outlines, into yielding curves and picturesque angles, into glades, into velvet-covered glades, into prairies of creeping plants, into forests of rose-bushes, by the delicate Ancnrrl-ze'r who next day made the desert of Africa and swept the continents into formation. Book Description
Excerpt from The Knickerbocker, or New-York Monthly Magazine, 1853, Vol. 42 It would be some little consolation to the traveller, if he could doze away the weary hours whilst passing through this uninteresting region, but the joltin of the diligence over a shocking road, and the cloud of dust in which is is enveloped, render this impossible. After a long and weary day's ride, I beheld in the distance imperial Toledo, rising from its lofty rocky foundation, with its Moorish Alcazar on one side, and its stupendous cathedral on the other, towering majestically above the town. The river Tagus surrounds the city except on one side, and this approach is protected by Moorish fortifications, now crumbling to ruin. After passing these fortifications, we ascended a very steep, winding road, and entered the city throu h a magnificent granite gateway. Book Description
Excerpt from The Knickerbocker, or New-York Monthly Magazine, Vol. 50: July, 1857 The Life of a Midshipman. Alas! Mr. Weathercock, ' replied my aunt, in a plaintive tone, shak ing her head mournfully from side to side as she spoke I find John so unmanageable that I have determined to send him to sea.' The honorable gentleman, who had never taken his eyes from my face during the continuance of this eulogium upon my character, seemed struck with a bright idea at its close. Stepping close up to my aunt, he whispered eagerly in her ear. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Knickerbocker, or New York Monthly Magazine, 1855, Vol. 45 But to return: there is one cause of complaint often alleged by Ame ricans against Europeans. You hear it most frequently from our best society, ' and it is one of the reasons why they are so often disgusted with Europe. But it applies generally, and is only oftener heard fiom them because their accidental position brings foreigners in America more into contact with them. The charge is this: that Europeans, after being treated with every possible attention in America, do not reciprocate this treatment to Americans, even their very entertainers, who visit them in Europe. Who have only contemplated party in this light - who have viewed it merely as a scene of contention and change, -have turned from it with honest but misa plied disgust. Though its details exhibit much that is sordid and revo ting, the study of its general laws will be found both profitable and elevating. Ignorance may despise the clod of the valley; but a more expanded contemplation informs us, that of such are composed the planets that move in harmony and glory around us. The particular details of the Whig party of the revolution would no doubt comprise much to excite disgust; ut the history of its acts and triumphs is read with delight and exultation.
