Book Description
An assessment of the question of Soviet succession in Khrushchev's 68th year, the fourth year of his rule. The study indicates that a succession crisis is inevitable when Khrushchev ceases to exercise dictatorial powers. The depth of the crisis, however, will depend on certain circumstances at the time. Only if the Soviet regime is seriously weakened by such a crisis is it likely that Soviet foreign policy will be redirected from its primary aim of subverting the West and achieving a communist world order. Moreover, while economic and social progress poses a serious problem for the regime and is certain to have important political consequences, it cannot, in the author's view, change the regime's totalitarian character in the years ahead unless it is seriously weakened by a succession crisis. (Author).

Book Description
First published in 1982, this book explores how Khrushchev and Brezhnev manipulated their policies and personal images as they attempted to consolidate their authority as leader. Central issues of Soviet domestic politics are examined: investment priorities, incentive policy, administrative reform, and political participation. The author rejects the conventional images of Khrushchev as an embattled consumer advocate and decentraliser, and of Brezhnev’s leadership as dull and conservative. He looks at how they dealt with the task of devising programs that combined the post-Stalin elite’s goals of consumer satisfaction and expanded political participation with traditional Soviet values.

Book Description
This authoritative study examines Russia's four key succession crises: after Stalin's death, throughout Khrushchev's primacy, during the implosion of the USSR, and with Putin's ascent to power. The distinguished authors argue that the common denominator has been the absence of a transparent, non-arbitrary, and lawful mechanism for the transfer of political power. Consequently, contenders for leadership have engaged in vicious power struggles followed by pseudo-legitimation of the victor. As Moscow reemerges as a major international actor, its unpredictability domestically triggers after shocks well beyond Russia's borders. Drawing on newly available primary sources, this book provides essential insights for practitioners and students of policy alike.
