The palm-nut meal used in these experiments was obtained from Messrs. Alex. Lawes and Gilbert, contains in 100 parts: --Moisture 6-24 Albuminous compounds 25 "83 Sugar, starch, and woody fibre 59-23 Mineral matter (ash) 8'70 100-00 Containing nitrogen 4-10 As far as these experiments go, it appears that the food given to Lot I. was incapable of maintaining the original live weight of the pigs, which were fed upon a limited supply of malt-dust and palm-nut meal, to which essence of mutton was added in a quantity which cost rather more than the addition of peas to the same amount of malt-dust and palm-nut meal, upon which Lot II. was fed. Under these circumstances peas produced a much better result than the Concentrated Mutton-soup. It appears from these experiments that essence of mutton...
