Book Description
From 5th September until 1st March 2020 the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, in conjunction with the City of Antwerp, VisitFlanders and the Flemish Community, presents 'From Titian to Rubens. Masterpieces from Antwerp and other Flemish Collections', an exhibition curated by Ben Van Beneden, director of Rubenshuis in Antwerp. The Doge's apartments will be transformed into veritable 'constkamers', rooms filled with exquisite art demonstrating the riches of Flemish collections. Featuring artists including Titian, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Michiel Sweerts, the exhibition offers an array of works. Three icons of Venetian painting return to their hometown of Venice: Titian's Jacopo Pesaro presenting Saint Peter to Pope Alexander VI, the altarpiece of the former San Geminiano church, covered by the press worldwide as David Bowie's Tintoretto', and Titian's Portrait of a Lady and her Daughter (thought to be a depiction of Titian's mistress Milia and their daughter Emilia). A special section of the exhibition will be devoted to Flemish composer Adriaan Willaert who settled permanently in 'la Serenissima' to become Maestro di Cappella of the Basilica di San Marco in 1527. It was Willaert who founded the Venetian School of music that was to instruct, among others, Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi.

Book Description
Now for the first time in paperback: Scribner's classic biography and introduction to the wide range of works by the great Flemish Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640).Rubens is an 'artist's artist', known for his glowing, painterly treatments of classical mythology and religious themes and his stunning portraits and landscapes. His paintings—many commissioned by Europe's leading princes and prelates—adorn the walls of the world's greatest museums, from the Hermitage, Prado, and Louvre to the Metropolitan and National Gallery. Painters from Watteau to Delacroix to Cézanne and Matisse have looked to Rubens for inspiration. His prodigious output included easel paintings, tapestries, altarpieces, decorative ceilings, sculpture designs, and monuments for festivals; he was also a leading diplomat—knighted by the kings of England and Spain—an antiquarian, humanist, and amateur architect: in short, the Baroque fulfillment of the Renaissance man. This illuminating biographical study of Rubens and his time is accompanied by 80 illustrations of Rubens's work and comparative examples by other artists. The 43 color plates are each introduced by in-depth commentaries on the picture's context and meaning.

Book Description
Perhaps the most enduringly influential painter of the Italian Renaissance, and the epitome of Venetian sensuality and color, Titian has inspired fanatical devotion in painters from Rubens to Velasquez, Rembrandt and beyond. With this majestic volume, published to accompany what will be the most important exhibition in Italy in 2013, he receives his most substantial monograph treatment in more than two decades. "The Concert" and "La Bella" (from the Palazzo Pitti); "Flora" (the Uffizi); "Charles V with a Dog" and the "Self-Portrait" (from the Prado); and the infamous "Flaying of Marsyas" (from the Kromeriz): these are just some of Titian's most celebrated paintings, all of which will be exhibited at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, in an exhibition designed as the magnificent conclusion to a sweeping overview of Venetian painting. In this accompanying catalogue, Titian's entire artistic career is represented at the most detailed level, decade by decade, scrutinizing his masterly sense of color and the development of his brushwork, with information gleaned from new scientific analysis of works carried out for the occasion. Also included are entries and essays by some of the world's most illustrious experts on this great Venetian master. Titian(born Pieve di Cadore, circa 1485-1576) began his career as an apprentice to Giorgione, and soon became the most important of the Venetian painting school. He died in his late 80s, a victim of the Venice plague--the only victim to be given a church burial.
