Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: B, University of Gloucestershire, language: English, abstract: International sporting events have gained an enormous popularity and importance both as a product within the leisure industry and as a marketing tool in destination marketing in the competition for visitors, residents and businesses between cities. This dissertation examines the influence of such international sporting events on the image of the host country or host city. The FIFA World Cup 2006TM serves as a case example, out of the host cities Hanover has been picked as an example. Within the dissertation the following research questions will be explored and answered: •Does image change happen due to international sporting events? •If so is it positive or negative? •Does the image change seem to be the same for host country and host city? •Are image changes related to the level of involvement and type of ecperience the people have? •Do image changes due to international sporting events have an influence on the people’s future travel plans? Should such sporting events therefore be of importance in destination management? The answers were derived of secondary and primary data; an online survey has been conducted by the author for the purpose of this dissertation in which over 400 people participated. The findings of this survey have been supported through findings of two further surveys, one undertaken on behalf of the German Tourism board and one by the international student organisation AIESEC, who also have been examining issues concerning the FIFA World Cup 2006TM.

Book Description
The research presented in the article is dedicated to the issue of utilizing sports to positively affect a state's image according to the example of staging sports mega-events. The aim of the research was to analyze if and to what extent hosting sports mega-events allows states to increase their international visibility and familiarity. The analysis was undertaken on the basis of fluctuations in the number of Google searches for the names of the countries that hosted the Olympic Games and FIFA World Cups between 2004 and 2018. Linear econometric models were constructed in order to measure the scale of the influence of hosting respective sports mega-events on the number of searches for respective countries in the Google search engine.

Book Description
The revival of interest in collective cultural memories since the 1980s has been a genuinely global phenomenon. Cultural memories can be defined as the social constructions of the past that allow individuals and groups to orient themselves in time and space. The investigation of cultural memories has necessitated an interdisciplinary perspective, though geographical questions about the spaces, places, and landscapes of memory have acquired a special significance. The essays in this volume, written by leading anthropologists, geographers, historians, and psychologists, open a range of new interpretations of the formation and development of cultural memories from ancient times to the present day. The volume is divided into five interconnected sections. The first section outlines the theoretical considerations that have shaped recent debates about cultural memory. The second section provides detailed case studies of three key themes: the founding myths of the nation-state, the contestation of national collective memories during periods of civil war, and the oral traditions that move beyond national narrative. The third section examines the role of World War II as a pivotal episode in an emerging European cultural memory. The fourth section focuses on cultural memories in postcolonial contexts beyond Europe. The fifth and final section extends the study of cultural memory back into premodern tribal and nomadic societies.
