The relations of the several races had elements Of trouble from the very beginning. The Indians told Sir William John son that they believed soon they should not be able to hunt' a bear into a hole in a tree, but some Englishman would claim a right to the property of it, as being his tree. (i) The French seem to have been better adapted to harmonious rela tions with the natives. There is a peculiar elasticity in the French character, and we stop not to Inquire whether it be feeling or philosophy, by which a Frenchman accommodates himself to any situation in which he may be placed. Upon the Seine and upon the St. Lawrence, if not equally pleased, he is equally pleasant; and during two centuries, in the depths of the American forests, he has associated With their rude tenants, and, as he could not elevate them to his own standard, he has descended to theirs. In their later years, Americans of different racial and ethnic backgrounds are not in equally good-or equally poor-health. There is wide variation, but on average older Whites are healthier than older Blacks and tend to outlive them. But Whites tend to be in poorer health than Hispanics and Asian Americans. This volume documents the differentials and considers possible explanations. Selection processes play a role: selective migration, for instance, or selective survival to advanced ages. Health differentials originate early in life, possibly even before birth, and are affected by events and experiences throughout the life course. Differences in socioeconomic status, risk behavior, social relations, and health care all play a role. Separate chapters consider the contribution of such factors and the biopsychosocial mechanisms that link them to health. This volume provides the empirical evidence for the research agenda provided in the separate report of the Panel on Race, Ethnicity, and Health in Later Life.

This publication draws on census figures and various other sources to pull together the available demographic data on American Indians and Alaska Natives. According to census figures, in the United States in 1988 there were l.7 million Native Americans belonging to about 500 tribes and native groups and speaking about 200 languages, but only 308 groups have a relationship with the federal government. Consequently, federal Indian agencies use numbers different from those used by the Census Bureau. Sections on population and residence (1) compare American Indian population, age, birth rate, infant mortality, mortality rate, suicide rate, and poverty rate to figures for total U.S. and non-White populations; (2) estimate numbers of Indians living on or near reservations in 21 states; and (3) provide details on the 10 states with largest Indian populations, the 10 largest tribes, and the 10 most populous reservations. The section on health discusses birth rates, infant mortality rates, mortality rates and leading causes of death, alcoholism death rates, and life expectancy. Among the ethnic groups, the poorest one in the USA is American Indians. Some of the realities and problems of American Indians include lower opportunities for education, a high rate of unemployment, homelessness, issues of permanent residency, psychological problems, geographic isolation, and drug abuse. For instance, 27% of American Indian households are below the poverty level, while it is about 11.6% among whites in the world. In addition, American Indians tolerate more violent crime compared to other ethnic groups in the United States. They are subject to such crimes like murder, aggression, gang violence, human and drug trafficking, and illegal migration through tribal lands. They also experience the highest rate of imprisonment in the USA. The Indians also face a lack of respectfulness to their culture from other ethnic groups, specifically from the whites. Such cultural incompetency or lack of cultural respect is partly originated from racial discrimination that is imposed on American Indians. Using discrimination theory, we can understand the relation between racial discrimination and the social challenges faced by American Indians. If Native Americans retrieve their cultural competences, the challenges they face can be mitigated. We have done our best to present some feasible results in order to solidify our problem and subject matter using mass surveys which have been done previously by Mary G Findling, Logan S. Casey, Stephanie A. Fryberg, Steven Hafner, Robert J. Blendon, John M. Benson, Justin M. Sayde, and Carolyn Miller from the universities of Harvard, Michigan and North Texas.
