The Indian telecommunications sector is an example of successful deregulation, having witnessed fundamental structural and institutional reforms in the post-Liberalisation period. India has emerged in recent times as one of the fastest growing telecommunications markets in the world, particularly by the unprecedented growth in mobile telephony. Mobile Number Portability (MNP) allows any subscriber to change his service provider without changing his mobile phone number. MNP was launched in India in Nov. 2010-Jan. 2011. The introduction of MNP was expected to promote more competition in the sector, and force service providers to improve service quality and reduce prices. The present study examines the effect of MNP on the student segment. The primary objectives of the study are to study the awareness level of MNP among the students, to explore the brand-switching behaviour of mobile users by accessing MNP, and to understand the factors influencing consumers towards MNP. The study shows that, though there is a very high level of awareness amongst students on MNP, there is not much response in terms of increasing the intension to switch service providers. In fact, the introduction of MNP has made the student segment more price- and quality-sensitive. As a result, service providers must offer better service at reduced prices in order to retain and expand its customer base.

Do switching costs reduce or intensify price competition in markets where firms charge the same price to old and new consumers? The answer is theoretically ambiguous because a firm prefers to charge a higher price to previous purchasers who are "locked-in" and a lower price to unattached consumers who offer higher future profitability. 800-number portability provides empirical evidence to determine whether switching costs reduce or intensify price competition under a single price regime. Before portability, a customer had to change toll-free numbers in order to change service providers. In May 1993, 800-numbers became portable, under a regulatory regime that precluded price discrimination between old and new consumers. I test how AT&T and MCI adjusted their toll-free services prices in response to portability. I find that the firms reduced prices with portability, implying that the elimination of switching costs due to portability made the market more competitive. Thus, despite rapid growth in toll-free services, the firms' incentives to charge a higher price to "locked-in" consumers exceeded their incentive to capture new consumers. Prices on larger contracts dropped more post-portability than those on smaller contracts, consistent with greater "lock-in" for larger users. I also find evidence that price changes after portability's announcement but before implementation are consistent with rational expectations assumptions of theoretical switching costs models.

Based on a game theoretical model I previously developed, I present some evidence of the effect of the unlocked-handset policy recently implemented in Peru based on market analysis and reduced form empirical methods using consumer panel data. Average prices declined since mid 2014, and the switching rate rocketed since the implementation of the policy in January 2015. To retain consumers and attract rival's consumers, companies responded also with very low on-net prices through their 'private network' with unlimited minutes, which may have increased the network effects in the market.From my estimation, I found a significant negative effect of switching costs on demand for voice traffic (which suggest a positive effect of the unlocked-handset policy on demand) and positive network effects on the demand. The policy, by reducing consumer switching costs, would have generated an increase of 39.7% in the minutes consumed by switchers. Moreover, any change of consumer status (company or consumption plan) is associated with 31.2% increase in minutes consumed. I also found that, with lower significance level, the policy would have induced a reduction of per-minute prices by 9.6%.

In order to survive and even thrive in today's challenging environment, mobile operators have taken a fresh look at their strategies and methods for retaining their subscribers. This research contributes towards a better understanding of the nature, dimensions and effects of switching barriers on subscriber retention by focusing on the Ghanaian mobile telecommunication industry. Switching barriers refers to any factors that make it costly or difficult for a subscriber to change his/her service provider. Two switching barriers were studied namely: switching costs, and attractiveness of alternatives. Regarding the perceived switching costs, three factors were identified. These were: Learning cost, search and evaluation costs, and uncertainty cost. Data was collected through self-administered questionnaires from over 385 subscribers. A 5-point Likert scale was used for each question. Descriptive statistics and relative importance index were used to analyse the collected data. The findings of the research reveal that switching from one mobile network to another in the Ghanaian mobile telecommunication industry is relatively easy. In April 2014, ICASA, South Africa's communications regulator, reduced mobile termination rates (i.e. tariffs mobile service providers can charge for terminating calls on each other's networks) from 40 cents to 20 cents per minute. Furthermore, mobile number portability has enhanced mobility of subscribers across networks. Mobile number portability means that subscribers can switch mobile network service providers without changing their mobile number despite it being issued by the network they are leaving. The price war amongst service providers means that all mobile network operators offer mobile voice calls and access to mobile data at comparable rates. There is now little differentiation between mobile network service providers, and mobile network service providers have to seek other sources of sustainable competitive advantage. It is against this background that the purpose of this research is to measure South African mobile phone consumers' perceptions and expectations of the service provided by mobile network service providers.
