Book Description
This monograph deals with the figurative and symbolic system in the novel “Oblomov” by I. A. Goncharov: it presents different interpretations of the image of Oblomov, demonstrates its complexity, organic combination of the typical and the individual. The author reveals the most significant artistic techniques of creating characters, typical for the novel and for the writer’s individual style in general. The study gives aesthetic characteristics of the novel characters, defines their artistic role and reveals polysemanticism in the novel structure. The “Supplement” presents a reflective hero in Russian literature and Soviet cinema (from Onegin and Oblomov to Zilov). The characteristic features of the literary type of “superfluous person” are highlighted in N. Mikhalkov’s film “A Few Days from the Life of I. I. Oblomov,” as well as in A. Vampilov’s play “Duck Hunting” and in its film adaptation “Vacation in September,” directed by V. Melnikov. The monograph is addressed to teachers and pupils, professors and students of philological faculties, as well as to everyone who reads and loves literature.

Book Description
Winner of the 2020 Pushkin House Book Prize Russia’s relationship with its neighbours and with the West has worsened dramatically in recent years. Under Vladimir Putin’s leadership, the country has annexed Crimea, begun a war in Eastern Ukraine, used chemical weapons on the streets of the UK and created an army of Internet trolls to meddle in the US presidential elections. How should we understand this apparent relapse into aggressive imperialism and militarism? In this book, Sergei Medvedev argues that this new wave of Russian nationalism is the result of mentalities that have long been embedded within the Russian psyche. Whereas in the West, the turbulent social changes of the 1960s and a rising awareness of the legacy of colonialism have modernized attitudes, Russia has been stymied by an enduring sense of superiority over its neighbours alongside a painful nostalgia for empire. It is this infantilized and irrational worldview that Putin and others have exploited, as seen most clearly in Russia’s recent foreign policy decisions, including the annexation of Crimea. This sharp and insightful book, full of irony and humour, shows how the archaic forces of imperial revanchism have been brought back to life, shaking Russian society and threatening the outside world. It will be of great interest to anyone trying to understand the forces shaping Russian politics and society today. Also available as an audiobook.

Book Description
First published in 1859, Oblomov is an indisputable classic of Russian literature, comparable in its stature to such masterpieces as Gogol's Dead Souls, Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov. The book centres on the figure of Ilya Ilyich Oblomov, a member of the dying class of the landed gentry, who spends most of his time lying in bed gazing at life in an apathetic daze, encouraged by his equally lazy servant Zakhar and routinely swindled by his acquaintances. But this torpid existence comes to an end when, spurred on by his crumbling finances, the love of a woman and the reproaches of his friend, the hard-working Stoltz, Oblomov finds that he must engage with the real world and face up to his commitments. Rich in situational comedy, psychological complexity and social satire, Oblomov – here presented in Stephen Pearl's award-winning translation, the first major English-language version of the novel in more than fifty years – is a timeless novel and a monument to human idleness.
