Studies in Romanesque Sculpture
Author: George Zarnecki
Publisher: Pindar Press
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 460
Book Description
Professor Zarnecki is the leading authority on English medieval sculpture. The present volume has assembled his major articles on Romanesque art published before 1979. These studies are primarily concerned with the changes that took place in English sculpture during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and attempt to set developments in English art over this period within a European context. The volume also deals with Romanesque sculpture in France and Italy, together with metalwork and woodcarving in England, and includes a number of important iconographical studies. The author has up-dated his earlier studies to incorporate the results of subsequent research, and has augmented several studies with added bibliographical notes or references to more recent discoveries. Additional illustrations have been added where necessary, including photographs of a number of monuments which were previously unpublished.

Cloister Design and Monastic Reform in Toulouse
Author: Kathryn Horste
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 424
Book Description
Whilst most scholarship in the field concentrates on the very early development of the Romanesque style in Toulouse, Dr. Horste's approach brings a fresh perspective to bear on the subject through her new definitions of second and third generation Romanesque sculpture, dating to c.1120-70. Focusing on the sculpture of three decorated cloisters she discusses current arguments concerning the revival of monumental sculpture in the Romanesque period; she also explores the role of Toulouse as an artistically active medieval city, its part in the monastic reform movement, and its political ties with the French monarchy in the later twelfth century. Dr. Horste's own photographs form a major contribution to her book: she has travelled throughout south-western France photographing Romanesque sculpture in many locations. She also provides a new series of photographs of the Romanesque sculptures in the Musee des Augustins in Toulouse, taken during a major reinstallation of the collections between 1976 and 1981.
