Excerpt from The History of Tonbridge School From Its Foundation in 1553 to the Present Date If good intentions, and an honest endeavour to carry them out, have any claim to disarm criticism, I trust that the many faults and shortcomings of this volume may be pardoned by my readers. It has long been my wish to see an authentic history of the School compiled; and when the old School was pulled down in 1863, I felt that such a work might considerably help to bridge over the gap that was created between those Old Boys who had passed their School days and had their School recollections wrapped up in the old building, and those who only know the School in its present improved state. It has been my aim to give a simple statement of all that is known on undoubted authority of the School in its earlier days.
