Book Description
Excerpt from The History of St. Martin's Church, Canterbury: A Monograph It was remarked by a visitor to St. Martin's Church only a few days ago, that a "book ought to be written about its antiquities." The same feeling has been held by the present writer for many years; and as early as 1881 he began to collect materials, which the somewhat laborious duties of an official life and the pressure of various occupations has hitherto prevented him from arranging and bringing into shape. The fact of no History of such a venerable Church having been previously written, appeared to him as incomprehensible as it does now to the numerous pilgrims from England, America, and France, until he ventured to undertake the task; and then the reason became abundantly evident. St. Martin s is the scene of one great historical event, and of one only. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Church of St. Martin, Canterbury: An Illustrated Account of Its History and Fabric St. Martin's Church appeals vividly both to the archaeologist and the historian. The date of its foundation is still uncertain, and there are many perplexing problems yet to be solved. We must leave their ultimate determination to time and to fresh explorations. Subjoined are the mature opinions of two eminent antiquaries. Whichever of them be right, the antiquity of the church and its associations for the English people are of supreme and unparalleled interest. 1. "We have at St. Martin's the concurrent testimony of history and of the building that it is of Roman date." 2. "I do not dispute that Augustine found a church (at St. Martin's), but I think nothing that is left can go farther back than the coming of Queen Bertha and her Christian family, who were using it when he came. Even so, it may claim to be the oldest of English churches - not merely by survival, but in fact." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
