Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Raymond, N. H Home I what a word! What interesting associations fill the mind when it is named. It is the place where our eyes first opened upon the beauties of this world; where we were first charmed by a mother's voice and fond caresses; a father's love and the prattle of sisters and brothers. There woman's smile greets us; children and friends gladly welcome us. The most of true bliss is enjoyed at home. Persons of labor and business toil on patiently for the blessing of home. Mariners on rough seas anticipate home. Soldiers on well-fought fields, dash through dust and blood with the hope of victory and the blessings of home again. Speak to children of home when away, and their countenances light up with joy. Speak to the aged of it, and their eyes sparkle; they seem youthful, living over again summers that Were all sunshine. These with many more say, Home, thy joys are passing lovely. They remember the dwelling of their childhood; the orchard, the meadow, the deep-tangled wild-wood, and withal, The old oaken bucket, the iron bound bucket, The moss-covered bucket which hung in the well. Book Description
Excerpt from Raymond, New Hampshire Fifty Years Ago an Address at the Old Home Week Celebration, Raymond, N. H., August 20, 1901 Mr. President, ladies, and gentlemen: It was a happy suggestion of Governor Rollins for the citizens of the towns of New Hampshire to invite the absent sons and daughters to revisit the old homes, so that they might renew old associa tions and recall former days. It is delightful to be here today and meet old friends, some of whom I have not seen for a generation. I am glad to accept your generous hospitality, and I am sure Old Home Week will be remembered as red-letter days in the history of the town. It is not strange that we who have strayed away from the old homes should find it delightful to revisit the old town. We love the hills and valleys, the brooks and meadows, on which we first looked, and where we roamed when children. We enjoy climbing the same old rocks, sitting under the same trees, on the same grassy banks, and in the same rooms of the dear old houses where the happy years of childhood were passed. We love the good old town, its people, and its history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
In his best-selling 1963 book, The Quiet Crisis, Stewart Udall warned of the dangers of pollution and threats to America's natural resources, calling for a nationwide 'land conscience' to conserve the nation's wild places. Along with Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (originally published 1962; in print with Penguin Modern Classics, 2000), The Quiet Crisis is credited with triggering the modern environmental movement in America.
