Book Description
Excerpt from The History of California With California history, on the other hand, back of 1821, the date of the establishment of Mexico's independence from Spain, the whole story is one of European history, of European govern mental plans and policies, and not until that date did its history become in any sense American. The result is that a history of events on these western shores before that date needs a complete knowledge of concordant European history to furnish the key. Take, for instance, the splendid work of the navigators: unless we have the informing knowledge of what went on behind the scenes. In Europe at a corresponding period, our history of the struggle of those interesting centuries, no matter how heroic. Book Description
Excerpt from History of California This book is an attempt to present the history of California in so simple and interesting a way that children may read it with pleasure. It does not confine itself to the history of one section or period, but tells the story of all the principal events from the Indian occupancy through the Spanish and Mission days, the excitement of the gold discovery, the birth of the state, down to the latest events of yesterday and to-day. Several chapters, also, are devoted to the development of California's great industries. The work is designed not only for children, but also for older people interested in the story of California, including the tourists who visit the state by the thousand every year. For her information the writer has depended almost entirely upon source material, seldom making use of a secondary work. Her connection with the old Spanish families has opened to her unusual advantages for the study of old manuscripts and for the gathering of recollections of historical events which she has taken from the lips of aged Spanish residents, always verifying a statement before using it. She has, also, from long familiarity with the Spanish-speaking people, been able to interpret truly the life of the Spanish and Mission period. Book Description
Excerpt from Brief History of California The history of California is unique. Its periods of growth are distinct epochs. It did not grow out of complex situations. A series of logical events succeeded each other, apparently in natural sequence, until a typical State of the United States was completely evolved. Its history since its admission is equal in interest to its romantic past and its thrilling present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of California: The American Period As the title indicates, this volume deals with the American period of California history. It thus aims to complement the work of Dr. Charles E. Chapman, whose History of California: the Spanish Period, has already made its welcome appearance from the press. As the preface to this latter volume states, the general plan of the two books was agreed upon as far back as 1914. Since that date, Dr. Chapman and the writer "have been in constant communication, but otherwise working independently, with the view to producing between them, an authoritative popular history of California." With the exception of a slight overlapping of the writer's opening chapters with the closing pages of Dr. Chapman's narrative (an overlapping, however, which has involved almost no actual repetition of incident), each book covers a separate field. Yet the keynote of the two volumes is essentially the same, namely, that California history is vastly more significant because of its national and international aspects than for any local interest it may possess. From this standpoint, the event of primary importance in the history of California is its transformation from a Mexican province into an American state. To this event, as Dr. Chapman shows, the Spanish period looks forward; from this event, dates the California of today and the greater California of tomorrow. In preparing this volume for the press, the writer has had in mind three objects - to make his book conform to the canons of sound scholarship; to escape a provincial and localized point of view; and to avoid being classed with those "who write for nothing so irrelevant as a reader." Book Description
Excerpt from A History of California: The Spanish Period This is the third volume of the writer which is the direct result of his enjoyment during two years of a Native Sons of the Golden West Traveling Fellowship, which enabled him to make researches in Spain. The writer's first thought, therefore, in publishing this volume is to express his gratitude to the patriotic Californian order which has made it possible. The other two works by the writer on the history of California were directed primarily to the history profession; one (The Founding of Spanish California) was an intensively documented monograph, and the other (Catalogue of Materials in the Archivo General de Indias) a technical manuscript guide. These two he is endeavoring in the present work to bring to their logical conclusion - the ultimate aim, indeed, of all historical scholarship - by publishing what he hopes may be accepted as an authoritative popular history. Since it is intended for the general public, this volume omits much of the professional paraphernalia, and does not hesitate to give space to interesting incident. As to its authoritativeness it is at any rate the product of thirteen years' investigation of Spanish Californian history, involving the use of thousands of hitherto unknown manuscripts, as well as important printed materials not previously digested or assimilated. Two outstanding reasons exist for the publication of this volume. In the first place, it presents a vast amount of new material, some portions of which have never before appeared in print, while others were not known, or not utilized, by the general historians of the state. Book Description
Excerpt from Last Leaves of American History: Comprising a Separate History of California This is an age in which men live in the present, and even in the conjectural future, more than in the past. From the electric rapidity of communication, the news of the world comes every day fresh to our firesides; and we have little leisure for reading more. But since every American, whether for the uses of business or politics, needs the current history of the United States, briefly arranged to his hand, - this volume of its "Last Leaves" has been prepared. The account of the Mexican war, herein contained, is taken from the author's history of "The Republic of America;" but that of California is not in any other work. Of the part which follows, a portion is taken from "The Republic," and the remainder is prepared expressly for this book. Book Description
Excerpt from California: Its History and Romance And they came in the lure of the song she sang, With their white sails, to her feet. So, like a mother with bursting breast, She claimed the brood of the seas, And the flaming lips Of her wild love pressed Upon them, about her knees; She crooned them to sleep on her bosom fair, Where their happy hearts were lain, And they laughed in her eyes that wrapped them there, Like their old, warm skies of Spain. Book Description
Excerpt from California: An Intimate History I have striven to be as accurate as history - never accurate - will permit, while writing an interesting story - Or a paradoxical drama - but I have enjoyed the reading of the many authorities as much as my own work, and therefore confidently recommend to Californians, at least, a thorough course in California history.
