Book Description
Excerpt from The History, Civil and Commercial, of the British Colonies in the West Indies, Vol. 2 of 2 There is likewife, in each of the Iflands, a confiderable number of perfons, of mixed blood, and Native Blacks, of free condition. In Jamaica they are reckoned, as we have them, at and I have reafon to believe they do not fall Ibort of the fame number in all the other Iflands col lee'tively taken. The whole inhabitants therefore may properly be divided into four great clafl'es. X. European Whites; 2. Creole or Native Whites; 3. Creoles of mixed blood, and free Native Blacks 4. Negroes in a fiate of flavery. I {hall treat of each Clafs feparately; premifing, however, that there are perfons not comprehended in either clafs; fuch as emigrants from North America, and a confiderable body of Jews. In Jamaica, the latter enjoy almofi every privile e pofl'effed by the Chrifiian Whites, excepting orgy the right of voting at eleetions, of being returned to ferve in the afl'embly, and of holdmg any office of ma gifiracy but they have the liberty of purchafing and holding lands, as freely as any other people. I have endeavoured to collect ufeful knowledge wherefoever it lay, and when I found books that could (apply what I fought, I have fometimes been content to adopt, without alteration, what was thus fur nifhed to my hands. Jthus, extracts and paf fages from former writers occupy fome of my pages; and not having always been careful to note the authorities to which I reforted, I find it now too late to afcertain the full extent of my obligations of this kind. They may be traced moft fi'equently, I believe, in the firfi and lait parts of my work: In the firfi, be caufe, when I began my talk, I had lefs con fidence in my own refources than I found after wards, when practice had rendered writing familiar to me and in the laft, becaufe, when.
