Book Description
Excerpt from The Historic Meaning of Prophecy The greater portion of the prophecies by far refer to the coming -day cycle, which is the era that contains the seven trumpets. John is the only prophet who men tions the seven seals and the seven trumpets; but the Old Testament prophets also wrote about those eras that John describes. The seven seals and the seven trumpets extend from the beginning of the Christian era to the beginning of the Millennial era. Prophecy is most profuse upon the sixth seal and sixth trumpet. Some prophets describe the progress of the Church, others describe the progress of Gentile dominion in the powers of the world, and others describe the progress of Antichrist, the minor prophets generally dwelling upon some particular eras. The major prophets describe the Church, the world powers, and the Antichrist by turns. The Bible method has been observed in this work by giving a description of the two spiritual powers in separate chapters. These are the best general suggestions that can be given, except the one most important of all, and that is the aid of the Holy Spirit. The person who reads prophecy as he reads history fails to apprehend it as a revelation from God. But it is even more than that: it is a revela tion of God; for that is the purpose of inspired revelation. Book Description
Excerpt from Prophecy and the Prophets in Their Historical Relations The past few years have seen a revival of interest in the study of the Scriptures. The unique place occupied by the Bible as a means of grace throughout the entire history of the Christian Church has again come to be recognized, and great numbers of old and young have taken up its earnest, devout, and systematic study. This study is by no means confined to the New Testa ment, for Christians are learning more and more that, while they find their loftiest inspiration in the study of the life, the character, and the teaching of the Master and of his disciples, the Old Testament has not been displaced by the New. The early Christians were right in placing the Old Testament by the side of the New, because the former is of inestimable value, and the earnest student soon finds that every part of the book is full of teaching that is of practical value even in the twentieth century A. Book Description
Excerpt from Prophecy and the Prophets IN Part I of this book the purpose of the author has been to present in a brief way the characteristic fea tures of Prophecy so that the ordinary reader may be helped to understand better this most important part of the Scriptures. An exhaustive study of the sub ject has not been undertaken. Such a study will be found by any one who has access to the excellent work of F airbairn on Prophecy, or the later work of David son. Both of these may be highly recommended. While Old Testament Prophecy is generally regarded as a difficult part of the Bible, the difficulties are not too great to be overcome, and any effort to this end will be richly rewarded. Book Description
Excerpt from Prophecies of Revelation and Daniel Developed in the History of Christendom There are periods in human history, corresponding, in some flame, to the cycles of the physical cosmos. In the natural world we have in the species the rotation of seed, plant and seed again. Experience teaches there has to be the seed in order to the existence of the plant from which the seed. And so it is said, Whether or not strictly with truth, speaking analogously, that history repeats itself. In regard to the subject of this treatise, therefore, prophecy may be thought of as the seed or germ Of which history is the full developed tree in all its ramifications and foliage. From the prophetic word, symbol or expression spring the Volumes of human history. It is the same power that is the author of the objects of nature, which foretells and develops human history in its seemingly cyclical manifestations, which, indeed, knows the beginning, the progress and the issue of all things.
