Book Description
Excerpt from The High Peaks of the Adirondacks This is the first of a series of publications to be issued from time to time by The Adirondack Mountain Club for distribution to its members and for general sale as facts and features are discovered or collected relating to the Adirondacks and deemed worthy of permanent record in this manner. In the present case it is believed that the Club is publishing, in accordance with its policy and its aims and purposes, a manuscript which is of decided interest and value. The achievement of the author of this article and his companions in climbing forty-two of the high peaks of the Adirondacks is stimulating to the cause of mountaineering in northern New York. Furthermore the piece will occupy a unique place in the bibliography of our New York State mountains, for undoubtedly the Marshall brothers and their guide are the only persons who have stood on the tops of all of the mountains described. The author is a charter member of The Adirondack Mountain Club, and he is turning his manuscript over to the Club as a contribution to the work of the organization. In granting permission for its publication, Mr. Marshall asked that it be made clear that he wrote only as the scribe and is speaking as much for "Herb" Clark, the guide, and George Marshall, his brother, as for himself. A word as to the interesting "rating" of the mountains which Mr. Marshall has included in his article. This of course is not to be taken as a standard set up by the Club. Book Description
The authors, Kim Ladd and Pam Ladd, visited over 120 bars inside the Blue Line and chose their own 46 High Peaks--bars, taverns, and inns with elevations that measure above average, show promise of longevity, offer diversity, and are venues that anyone would find comfortable. Those that were hard to cut from the High Peaks are listed as Trailheads--worthy of a visit if you're in the neighborhood. The Adirondack Park is 9,375 square miles, or 6.1 million acres. Kim and Pam covered it. Given the size of the park, they decided to break it into five regions: Foothills, Eastern Lakes, Southern & Sacandaga, High Peaks, and Western Wilderness. This Adirondack bar guide contains reviews of 46 bars, a summary of their amenities at-a-glance, and a brief outline of the Trailheads, all listed by region. The recipe section features the authors' own drink recipes, and signature drink recipes contributed by many of the High Peaks bars.

Book Description
The unique geological history of the Adirondacks can be found in a pebble. So discovers humorist and outdoorsman Tim Rowland as he chronicles the evolution of hiking in the howling wilderness of the High Peaks. From nineteenth-century guides random scoots to Melville Deweys Adirondaks Loj to todays technologically enhanced weekenders, Rowland, who has climbed the forty-six himself, incorporates personal anecdotes and laugh-out-loud wit to capture the appeal and beauty of this beloved region, all the while reminding us of the importance of keeping these stunning mountains, and their attendant neat rocks, Forever Wild.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Adirondacks It had been raining for almost ten days, and we were getting short of small-talk, when Lynn made his suggestion. "Let's look ahead," he said. "We've remembered the sugar and the lantern and the dish-towel, but we've left out the most important thing of all." "Not matches," I said, "and there's lots of punky dope left. What do you mean?" "This trip needs an underlying motive," he went on, "or it'll peter out. It's good enough fun fishing, and it's good enough fun getting lost, but it'd be a whole lot better if there was a reason for doing these things. I think I've got one!" I paid more attention to the fire than I did to him, because he's always gratifying his passion for making good things better, while I like to gratify mine for letting them alone.
